What is going on with plastic bottle caps?

The last few months any plastic bottle I’ve bought whether it’s a small coke, sprite, Pepsi, water or a big 2 ltr bottle the lid won’t detach properly from the bottle. Like there’s a stalk of plastic from the breakable ring which stays attached and you really have to twist the stalk to remove the lid. Someone else at work said the same today so it’s not just me. Every single bottle. Never had an issue until a few months ago.

Maybe it’s a ploy to stop me buying plastic bottles!

Yes, they are very annoying as you often can’t screw then back on to the bottle properly and then they leak 😩

Actually444 · 19/12/2023 14:52

It's to make recycling easier. I think it states it on the bottle.

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/12/2023 14:54

They used to always poke me in the face before I realised they stay pushed back if you just push them far enough 😄

Probably makes it easier to recycle - one piece rather than 2. Litter picking always provides loads of bottle-less bottle caps.

It was an EU directive thing that is to help with recycling and stop bottle tops and the ring things getting into wildlife. They are supposed to stay attached to the bottle so you don’t ’forget’ to recycle them

BooBooBaloo · 19/12/2023 14:56

It's done on purpose, so the lid stays with the bottle for recycling

idontlikealdi · 19/12/2023 14:57

I hate it. If I'm drinking from the bottle I dont want the lid flapping my nose.

CormorantStrikesBack · 19/12/2023 14:58

Oh that makes sense. But I agree you don’t seem to be able to screw the lids back on as well and if they’re half full they leak. Plus i don’t want to drink with the cap banging against my face. 🤷‍♀️

It is genuinely so annoying

PuttingDownRoots · 19/12/2023 14:59

I just twist them off. I understand the reasoning but it makes them difficult to re tighten.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2023 15:00

It's a good idea in theory but the implementation is poor.

A) the cap needs to be able to be moved a bit further to allow for drinking from the bottle (i can manage ok but DH finds it a pain and is liable to wrench the lid off defeating the point)
B) it's usually quite hard to put the cap back on again properly.

kitsuneghost · 19/12/2023 15:00

I noticed this on highland spring water
Ended up warping the cap and then water all over everything in my bag.

MaggieFS · 19/12/2023 15:03

I think the stalk needs to be longer to get the cap away from one's nose and make it easier to screw back on.

QueenCamilla · 19/12/2023 15:07

I'm totally frustrated by the bottles with the drinking nib. I used to just unscrew the lid and drink like everyone normally would. Now some of the lids don't come off and I'm stuck with sucking on water like a baby would.
I'm making a mental note to never buy those brands again.

Mayhemmumma · 19/12/2023 15:09

Blimey, for years I've binned the caps and recycled the bottles.

Earhell · 19/12/2023 15:10

Wow this is so interesting. Its been very useful for my adhd brain! It means I'm not constantly losing the lids every single time!

cardibach · 19/12/2023 15:11

They stay clicked back if you push them far enough, and if you line them up properly they also screw back on tightly. They are annoying though, and a poor design.

unsync · 07/05/2025 06:07

If you look at the cap, there are two stalks, snap one stalk and the lid functions properly. These have been in use for ages where I am. It is to prevent plastic littering.

There used to be a lot of bottle tops which ended up in the sea, now there are far fewer, although plastic on the whole is still a problem.

Lioncubhearted · 07/05/2025 06:50

I think they're so much more practical. The DC can't drop one half way through their drink! I believe the idea is so there is less litter, which can only be a good thing.

We did have the issue with the DC not screwing the lids on properly again and then leaking in their bags. (Usually when they tried to force close it) If you put the lid over the bottle and twist it a quarter turn in the wrong direction then the threads align and you can do it up easily.
