Why these blood test?

I went to the doctors recently as I have been having extreme hormonal changes, normally around 2 weeks before my period I become depressed and suicidal, I was a self harmer when younger and for the first time in about 20 years I have felt like doing it again (but havent).
I have spent the last 20 odd years on hormonal contraception but came off everything about 2 years ago.
I have started taking vitamins and read that the combined pill can help (and I was wanting to start back on hormonal contraception anyway) but was told they needed a second opinion due to my age and on the border of my bmi. I was then told that she had discussed with others and they had thought of an alternate path then the pill.

I have been asked to have blood tests which are
Lipids and Urea and electrolytes but I can't figure out why. These are the only blood test I have been asked to have.

Can anyone help?

They are checking your cholesterol and kidneys. Who knows why! I suspect it’s a general health check since they’ve got you there. Are you on any meds? Like for high blood pressure, etc?

When I went to ask about perimenopause symptoms and HRT, I got a full work up of blood tests, including cholesterol and liver/kidneys. I think it’s to rule anything else out and since they have you there for a bit of an MOT. Showed I’m healthy as a horse though!

The test for lipids can also screen for other problems such as liver function, so it just sounds like a basic M.O.T.

It's just strange, the only health issues I have is an underactive thyroid.
Thyroid isn't being checked and neither are my hormones, I would have thought with the symptoms they would have been checked.

No idea! Can see that as you are older they may not want to prescribe the combined pill. But no clue why those bloods.

Liver function is a test all of its own.

Lipids will give you a q risk score, your risk of developing CVD in the next 10 years. Kidney function can be out of range for all sorts of reasons so it’s a good health risk indicator. If you are top end of BMI they are assessing health before deciding on appropriate pill maybe?
Over 45 menopause bloods aren’t done because it’s a given over 45 that you are peri p, and a blood test -unless screening for early menopause-isn’t really going to show much at that age.

Thanks. For the replies

My bmi is about 31, I'm 36 and have early menopause in the family (my mum was 33)

I had my hormones checked a few years ago as I thought I was starting the menopause but it was just my thyroid playing up, other then that it was all OK.

I just can't figure out why any of those blood tests relate to the symptoms I went to the doctor in the first place for.
