What are your Best and Worst Sofa Recommendations

After having an awful experience with Next over a really shit sofa they sold me I'm looking to replace it.

I'm looking for something comfortable - I like a deep seated sofa that you can sink into. Good quality, I don't mind spending a bit more if it means decent quality.

I had my heart set on a Loaf two seater pudding sofa for one side of the living room and either a sugar bum or crumpet chaise sofa on the other side. Those are the styles I like, but I've heard mixed things about Loaf and because they're not cheap I'm nervous to commit.

Sidenote: I also have the added pressure of trying to appease a grumpy DH who is primed to grumble at the slightest issue with any decision I make (another story for another thread on another day) but the added pressure means I do not want to mess this up and be faced with endless needling every time the fucker plants his miserable arse amongst the cushions.

What are your good and bad sofa purchasing experiences? Who do you recommend and who would you avoid?

We just get DFS and replace every 4 years approx. 😳 they're not great quality but we've never kept a sofa for years and years, tastes change I guess and we've moved a lot.

I always go for Ektorp by IKEA. We've had our most recent one since 2009 and just updated the covers a few times since they're machine washable and fairly easy to remove/change when our tastes have changed. Far cheaper than replacing an entire sofa every few years and looks great. I'd see if they have anything along those lines that might be to your taste. I do like the Loaf one as well but agree it's expensive when there's quite mixed reviews so I'm also hesitant on that.

I've had a dfs sofa for 4 years and it's still like new!

Barker and Stonehouse have been brilliant. Received a big corner chaise sofa and a leather sofa. Quality brilliant & comfy. Provided us with complimentary cleaning kits for both sofas. Got them in the Jan sales and took out 0% over 4 years with them. We added the protection on, glad we did as I spilt something on one of the sofas and they sent someone out to clean, couldn't remove stain so we received new cusion covers.

My parents had one from Laura Ashley,(leather) and still going strong 15+ years later.

Hope you find your sofa.

Patterdale from dfs

We've had our John Lewis sofas for a decade. They are still super-comfy and in most places the fabric looks good. I do have two arsehole cats who have shredded the fabric on the not-wall side of each, but that's not the sofa's fault, and to be fair they've yet to go completely through the fabric even though it looks very tatty. I will probably get the same ones again next time but change the colour.

Every 4 years?! DFS probably have finance deals that are longer than that! 😂 What do you do with the old sofas? They never seem to sell for much second-hand

I've sold a few £100-£200 ish usually. Or donate to charity.

Thank you so much, these are some great recommendations to be getting on with!

@Purplerainpurplesky I've just looked at the DFS Patterdale, its similar to the Loaf Sugar Bum and cheaper by the looks of it! Great recommendation, thank you!

Fair enough, and it's up to you of course. I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle of replacing that often. I'd also worry I'd replace a comfy one for one that wasn't as nice

If you are in the Midlands/SW, the John Lewis outlet shop in Swindon has all their returns, and there is usually a big range of sofas there at 2/3 or greater discount. Very happy shopping - and you get to sit on your actual sofa.

I love my loaf sofa. 5.5 years on and it still looks new despite a lot of spills and lounging on it.

my new snug one however :( it is like sitting on a pallet of bricks. Showing no sign of softening and the material picks up every bit of fluff in the room,
