What is the best compliment someone could pay you?

In my younger years it would have been that I was attractive. I was always secure in my intelligence and being a good friend so I can see why I cared.

But now (50) I don't actually know what someone could say that would make me feel pleased. I am still confident in my intelligence and kindness, I've stopped caring about being attractive. I'd love to be complimented for being stylish but I am not so that would be insincere.

I really cannot think of anything! This thought has come about because a couple of people recently have made comments that are basically 'you are no longer young' and I don't even care that it's probably a rude thing to say to someone.

What would you be thrilled to hear about yourself?

More about being invisible, I don't get it.

I dont really get this either.

Maybe it's said by very attractive women who could always walk to the front of a queue or get what they ask for and once a bit older they can't.

I was pretty attractive (and still am 'for my age') but I've always had terrible service and don't feel any less invisible than I used to.

Same, infact I feel more visible as I get older. Older women around me say the same. More confident, get taken more seriously, get chatted to more. I'm more seen than I've ever been.
When younger I was ignored by most, general public I mean. And I see the same now, younger people are in their own world and most leave them to it.
Unless people are just referring to being perved on by sleazy men who only like young women. That why is that a bad thing to not have that anymore!?

Ex told me I'm a natural mother which has never stopped warming my cockles.

BethDuttonsTwin · 19/12/2023 11:38

To be told I am loyal. I prize it hugely in friends and family and try my hardest to show it to those I care about. That’s not to say I won’t tell them they’re being chumps when necessary but certainly never in front of outsiders or those they’re in conflict with. I listen to people moaning about their kids - including my own parents - and find it incomprehensible, I would never in a million years publicly slate my children.

Earlier in the year my Foster Son's biological mother died. It was unexpected and I had to tell him. He was in the garden and I went out to him, he was messing around with a football and looked so happy and I hated that I'd hath to tell him. I told him his Mum had been found dead and expected he'd be upset. He was silent for about a minute, then he looked up took my hand and said "You're my real Mum, you brought me up and you're still alive". I was the one that cried not my Foster Son. Best compliment I could ever have.

I love people telling me that my house smells nice! It makes me feel really nice.

I work on a customer service desk in a supermarket. I always try to be warm and friendly but one regular customer made my day last week. He's a lovely man who I enjoy seeing. He's autistic and gets very anxious sometimes if he has to wait long in the queue as it can be overwhelming for him.As I was chatting to him he said he always likes being served by me as I make him feel safe when he comes in. That really made my day as it was a lovely unexpected compliment.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/12/2023 08:32

Last week I was in a store room and a bunch of people in the corridor (who didn't know I was there) were wondering who the last volunteer would be for a thankless group task. Then someone came along and said "It's TheYearOfSmallThings" and there was a chorus of "yay/phew/lovely/nice one". Luckily really, because I had to come out of that store room.

So I am going to say the compliment you receive behind your back is the sweetest one!

RosesAndHellebores · 22/12/2023 08:33

I'm 63. My boss (51) told me it was hard to compute that I was because of my energy and style. I like it that people are surprised when they find out how old I am.

Whilst I don't feel invisible at all, I have been surprised at some ageist comments. On here and also in dealing with the NHS.

Gosh i'm ashamed to say the first thing that popped into my head was

'have you lost weight?'

& I'm not overweight.

“ You have a great son, he is a credit to you” that’s the best compliment I’ve ever had.

Yes, this! In fact I have a new group of friends who initially didn’t know he was my son, and they were singing his praises before I came clean and “owned” him!

Mabelface · 22/12/2023 09:42

A colleague telling me that my warmth and kindness draws people in and makes them feel safe.

Mummyofthewildones · 22/12/2023 09:45

Good mum, kind and compassionate. These are things I pride myself on so it's lovely if they get validated by others!

Spacecowboys · 22/12/2023 09:47

That the junior staff in our team see me as someone to aspire too. I wasn’t expecting that so it was lovely. Also being told by a mum that she hopes she has a relationship like I do with my DC’s when hers are teens.

baubletits · 22/12/2023 09:51

The day I got married, the registrar told me and DH we had a beautiful family. It was the most perfect, intimate wedding and in that moment it was lovely to hear as finally tying the knot felt like the final step for all 4 of us.

Another friend a few years later told me what a credit our kids were to us, it made me so proud and think that whilst I'm not the best mum, we're doing an ok job so far.

Undineimmor · 22/12/2023 10:05

That I make other people feel good about themselves and give them confidence.

From my appearance, people always assume I am looking for compliments and validation while actually my biggest Joy is seeing other people do well, gain confidence and succeed. I've had a few compliments along these lines. I've never been afraid to compliment people and to build them up and I know on a few occasions it has made a bid difference to people.

But my most treasured compliment- family member has achieved something amazing and told me "I did it because you always told me I could do anything I wanted to."❤️

This just made me well up, so lovely ❤️

FrangipaniBlue · 22/12/2023 11:26

I think anything that comes from our children.

People tell me I'm "inspirational" both in my career and personal life (due to sporting achievements) and I get a bit embarrassed....

but earlier this year at the end of an event , right after I crossed the finish line I could see DS(15) elbowing his way through the other spectators to get to me, he flung his arms around me (almost choking me!) and declared "mam, you are fuckin awesome!"

Cloud nine that moment.

Sux2buthen · 22/12/2023 11:29

My friends husband said I'm the funniest person he's met in real life. That made me very happy!

Spirael · 22/12/2023 11:44

Maybe I need to have bigger aspirations, but I just love it when someone notices what I've been doing (usually working quietly behind the scenes to make things happen and run smoothly) and thanks me for my efforts. 😊
