Famous artist working in watercolour and pen

DD13 is looking for an example of a famous fine artist working in watercolour and fineliner pen. She needs to find one for her school art project but her teacher has rejected all the examples she’s found online as not being sufficiently established artists.

Can you suggest any artists working like this? Can be contemporary but has to be well known.

I wonder if illustrators might be the right thing to look at? I don't know but I wonder about Quentin Blake? Less likely, but maybe people like Janet Ahlberg or similar?

ginandbearit · 18/12/2023 21:52

Quentin Blake children's illustrator
David Gentleman fine line and wash studies of cities
Sir Hugh Casson architect, fine artist
These are older (and two deceased) artists
Check Instagram for many good artists though whether any are currently famous or well regarded is another thing.

More thinking - maybe Beatrix Potter?

RumNotRun · 18/12/2023 21:55

Can't help sorry, but who is the artist that did that picture? I love it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 18/12/2023 21:56

Elizabeth blackadder?

I used to teach A level and GCSE. Amazing results year in year. Ofsted described the dept as inspirational.

The teachers is taking utter shite. In fact this is severe misinterpretation of the syllabus.

It can be any artist or designer. Not someone famous. Local, unknown or whatever. They all count.

Teacher does sound very limited.
If looking for a classical style

Thank you, everyone. I have sent the suggestions to DD.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow its odd isn’t it? DD is not at GCsE stage yet but surely anyone who inspires her is worth looking at? Just seems a bit arbitrary.

I've been thinking about this more and I wonder if looking up "line and wash" drawings might enable your daughter to find more examples - maybe not with modern materials but conceptually they feel similar.

e.g.

They have a whole page of pen and ink drawings:

Encyclopedia Britannica also has a couple of pages about it.

I've just worked out that it's over 31 years since I did a project on him for my GCSE art Shock 👵

cezannesapple · 18/12/2023 23:13

I’d look at John Piper or someone like Graham Sutherland.

herbygarden · 18/12/2023 23:14

Not certain but possibly Charles Rennie Mackintosh?!

PowerTulle · 18/12/2023 23:16

Tracey Emin has used pen, watercolor and ink with colour wash. She draws beautifully and makes very powerful work.

Not illustrative style though.

MiddleAgeAllTheRage · 18/12/2023 23:17

What a beautiful painting 🎨🥰

CormorantStrikesBack · 18/12/2023 23:20

Yoshitomo Nara has done some art which is watercolour and pen. Though not in the style of the one in the OP.

Peggy Fortnum? - Paddington

Floopyfloop · 18/12/2023 23:25

Jason brooks the illustrator uses this medium. He mainly uses pen and graphic marker but will also use watercolour

PowerTulle · 18/12/2023 23:29

John Burningham. (Wrote and illustrated the Mr Gumpy books).

John Burningham. (Wrote and illustrated the Mr Gumpy books).

He’s not exactly a household name. If OP’s child’s choices have been turned down I’d suggest they go for someone well recognised in the art world. I’m not saying the teacher is right but if that is what they want then give it to them.

Rocknrollstar · 19/12/2023 08:52

Ravillious and David Gentleman

Bloodybloodtest · 19/12/2023 08:56

I instantly thought of John Burningham too. For anyone with kids or familiar with children’s books, would recognise his work instantly. I love it.

PowerTulle · 19/12/2023 21:08

cezanne - John Burningham has a 50 year career as an illustrator. He’s world renowned for his art and writing, won many awards, worked on 60+ books and his collections of original work is exhibited still today. I suppose it depends on what the teacher means by ‘established’ (!)
Being a household name is different altogether, but I’d still say JB is well loved in many.

3beesinmybonnet · 19/12/2023 21:21

Gerald Scarfe?

Castellanos · 19/12/2023 21:40

Lots of great suggestions here @LightToTheWorld
Has your dd found someone she likes yet?
