Cleaner over Christmas and New Year

Almahart · 18/12/2023 20:48

It's been years since I've had a cleaner so I'm not sure what I should do here. My cleaner is absolutely brilliant and I really want her to be happy. She comes on a Monday, obviously I paid her for next Monday which is Christmas day. I have just realised that the following Monday is New Years Day which is a bank holiday. What do I do? Pay her for that day too? I assume she won't be working, though I have just asked, which was probably a bit of a crass thing to do.

What is the correct thing to do here?

Do you pay her on bank holiday Mondays usually?
I just pay my cleaner by the hour whenever she works, same with my dog walker. I don’t pay in advance.

Almahart · 18/12/2023 20:57

She's only been with me for about eight weeks, so it hadn't occurred to me, but you are right, it is going to be every bank holiday. Tricky

Miss xmas and then could she come on Tuesday instead?

Almahart · 18/12/2023 21:00

Yes was wondering about that, I think she's pretty booked up but that would be a good solution if poss

I used to be a cleaner I would move my days if they fell on a bank holiday . I wouldn’t expect to be paid

topcat2014 · 18/12/2023 21:01

MN gets funny with cleaners. Just pay when they work like any other self employed person.

Or ask for a clean on another day

PickledPurplePickle · 18/12/2023 21:04

I'm not paying my cleaner next week, she's self employed, so I only pay her when she is here - apart from last week, I was sick and cancelled at the last minute, so paid her as it was my fault and short notice

Cynderella · 18/12/2023 21:05

My cleaner, by arrangement doesn't come during the school hols. I pay when they clean - if they cancel or if it's school hols, I don't pay. I've not cancelled, but if I did, I would try to arrange a different day.

Last week, I paid them double - normal amount by ban transfer and same again in cash for Christmas.

DGPP · 18/12/2023 21:06

I only pay my cleaner when she comes, if it was a bank holiday I’d expect her to squeeze me in later in the week.
I do also pay her if we’re on holiday but I don’t pay her when she’s on holiday

Daffyyellow · 18/12/2023 21:07

Mine visits on a Tuesday, she has rearranged for the 27th. She is self employed, I pay her for the hours worked.

theduchessofspork · 18/12/2023 21:08

I’d pay her if you can

But I would certainly ask if she can fit in a NY week clean on another day

wutheringkites · 18/12/2023 21:09

I don't pay my cleaner for bank holidays or her own holidays but I do pay her if we are away. If she's not working on our normal day, I ask for another day.

But why? I'm self employed and I don't get paid for bank holidays.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/12/2023 21:15

I don't pay when she's on holiday, I do pay for things like her being off sick, and I'm paying her for the missed Xmas / new year clean because it's Xmas.

Being self-employed is really shitty, no job security, and if you don't get paid when you are off sick then you struggle to get better etc.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 18/12/2023 21:27

Mine usually comes on a Monday. If she doesn't come, I don't pay her - as I don't pay any other service provider who opts to not provide their service. I do, though, try and accommodate her request to change the hours to a different day.

Fynoderee · 18/12/2023 22:05

My clients only pay if I go. Cleans that fall on a bank holiday are either missed that week or moved to another day of space available.

I have never had any client in 10 yrs offer to pay me when I’m sick/when they’re sick/when either party is on holiday. I don’t understand the thought process behind this.

ChocolateTVandbaby · 18/12/2023 22:15

We only pay our cleaner on a clean by cleaning basis. She cleans and then she gets paid per clean. It's not a weekly or monthly amount so it has not occurred to me to pay her when she doesn't clean

Cynderella · 18/12/2023 22:54

I do some tutoring, and I get paid by the session, although I do reserve the right to charge for cancellations without notice. If a client has been reliable, I waive the charge for illness. If I teach on a Monday in Mar - May, and it's a holiday, I offer to do the session anyway, or rearrange. Other times in the year, I only work school terms. I am offering a service, so if clients don't get the service, I don't expect them to pay. However, if I turn up or am about to, and I'm cancelled,I feel entitled to charge. If I'm given notice, I suck it up. I think in the same way about paying my cleaner.

determinedtomakethiswork · 19/12/2023 00:49

After eight weeks, I wouldn't pay her. I would ask her to fit it in on another day and if she couldn't do it, then she could just come the next Monday. However, I would say to her that this is going to happen for every bank holiday.

Iizzyb · 19/12/2023 06:47

Mine will come another day instead but i give her extra cash at Christmas x
