Shit I accidentally set a marzipan into a nut free school

DS gets a snack box to school as he's autistic and often doesn't eat school dinner.
The box is bigger than I would send otherwise as it's intended to be a makeshift lunch if needed.
In addition to the usual fruits, veg, cheese etc he always hangers a cake type thing - something like a mini roll.

However as it's Christmas we had mini Stollen in the house so I sent that.

I had no idea there was marzipan in the middle! I hate raisins so have never eaten the stuff and DH had taken it out of the packaging and out in the biscuit barrel.

Thankfully the SEN unit is separate and there's no nut allergies there.

But shit, I fucked up.

What's the worst you've fucked up with school stuff?

No school but I boarded a 10 hour flight with food because I hate airline food and hadn't bothered requesting meals we could eat, we had wraps with sesame in them, snickers bars and flapjacks, everything contained nuts basically ... and then over the sound system comes that it's a nut free flight! Well nobody complied, guy was eating peanuts next to me so I ate my food.

I do have sympathy for those with extreme allergies but I think other customers should be alerted at least 48 hours before the flight if there's restrictions

That’s actually awful - you could have had a meal that you might not enjoy but at least there was no risk to a fellow passenger. We have become truly selfish as a society.

Icalledmywheelchairdoris · 18/12/2023 21:11

@Illbebythesea
Pine nuts are a seed, not a nut. I would have queried it with the school. You can, however buy nut free pesto.

I have a severe allergy to macadamia nuts and possibly brazils. Found out about that the hard way. You could sit next to me eating them by the handful and nothing would happen. However, if you hadn't washed your hands and then passed me something to eat, that's when things get interesting. There have been studies on airborne nut allergies and to date, no-one has been able to produce a reaction.
However, I actively don't like it when people try and enforce 'no nuts' around me. It does nothing to make me feel secure, if anything it goes the other way. I'd rather check food for myself than have to rely on someone else. For example, a lot of cosmetics and skin creams contain various nut oils (usually almond and/or peanut). How many people checked their cosmetics/toiletries e.t.c this morning?

booboo57 · 18/12/2023 21:11

I used to work with someone who was severely allergic. Sat opposite her one day when she started heavy breathing red in the face lips swelling. We had a large spacious and airy office so we could only assume someone had something nutty yards away. She had her epipen and was OK.

@Icalledmywheelchairdoris i have been unable to buy but free pesto in supermarkets. DD now 19 makes it herself and uses sunflower seeds. Most shop bought pesto uses cashews.

Had my son been on this flight, we probably would have made it over water before having to emergency land to off load him in severe anaphylaxis.
The level of selfishness astounds me. It could literally kill him. You know if could kill him. Is it attempted murder?

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 18/12/2023 21:21

I boarded a transatlantic flight once and immediately opened & ate a snickers bar. Seconds later came the announcement that it was a nut free flight. I called the attendant to explain that I'd already polluted the flight. This caused all sorts of issues as you'd expect especially as, once they identified the person with the allergy, the person said it didn't really matter. The crew didn't want to take off with them on board in case they went into shock and were over the Atlantic at the time. In the end, the person managed to convince the crew that they would be OK - and they were.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 18/12/2023 21:24
  • and they were - but I was really worried for the whole flight as a good friend is severely allergic and thinks she must have reacted to airborne nut particles before as she doesn't know what else she could have reacted to.
I still don't understand why the crew didn't announce it before we boarded. You hang around for long enough and there would have been plenty of time.

I have a good one. I found an alive tick on my puppy for the first time. I don’t kill anything so I put it in a small Tupperware while I decided what I would do with it. In the morning I’d decided I would take it on a forest walk and put it out. When I went to get it the tub was gone! I hadn’t told DH it was there and assumed tick was now crawling about our floor, as he’d have opened tub to put it in dishwasher.

Went to ask DH and it turned out he’d given DD a bit of cake for school snack and put it in the tub! This was morning time and he said he’d told her to eat it at lunch, so I rang the office and had a giggle with the office lady about the random request to check the tub. She called back 5 min later sounding brave, saying DD had eaten the cake and asked me would she be ok? I said yes and felt sorry for poor DD in case I’d freaked her out.

When I picked her up I apologised and she said ‘I saw the tick mum! It was on my cake so I went and shook it off in the sensory garden in the playground’. So some poor mum ended up with wee ticky coming home to them, probably! Oops

This isn’t a ‘good one’, not funny or a story I would ever tell.
have you any idea how stupid this is?

Don’t think anyone who has a nut allergy or works for any allergy charities would advise this. This is some kind of nonsense someone made up because it irritated them they couldn’t eat nuts on an aeroplane and wanted to be dismissive. Kids have sticky hands, get close to each other and share food without understanding consequences. They need to be looked after and having nut free schools is a very good way of helping to do this. And anyone who has a child with a severe allergy of any type will know there is no such thing as a feeling of security, false or otherwise.

Allergy UK, as posted up thread, advise against nut free schools. There is a quote further up if you want to see it…

wizzbitt · 18/12/2023 21:31

My DP accidentally gave DS then in yr 1 a nutty snack for his packed lunch. DS said he was allowed to eat it but told not to do it again. DP made his sandwiches the next day. Peanut butter Hmm Thankfully he realised in good time!

bellac11 · 18/12/2023 21:31

Why are people attacking the tick poster, it wasnt done on purpose, it wasnt even her, it was her husband, no one knew and it couldnt be helped.

It is a bizarre and unusual situation and I would imagine most people could see the humour in it.

PickAChew · 18/12/2023 21:33

Citrusandginger · 18/12/2023 21:01

Bollocks, more likely caused by antibiotics in newborns among other things.

Blimey, when did eating newborns become a thing? I know I don't keep up but that one completely passed me by.

They're delicious crumbed and deep fried. Really tender.

MissionImpossible3 · 18/12/2023 21:35

The problem with warning people about nut allergies before a flight is that very often there is no one to speak to and if we do find someone they usually ask us to let the flight attendants know. My daughter has an anaphylactic nut allergy and is at risk if someone eats nuts and then she touches somewhere that they have touched. On a flight any help is a long way away and she is understandably very anxious. Those of you who carry on eating something with nuts anyway despite being told that she is on board; are putting her life at risk and would be responsible if something happened. Please think twice about eating your Snickers bar. We have been on flights where people have laughed and suggested eating nuts so they can see what happens, I struggle to believe how selfish people are.

Pretty damn sure that if “you and yours” (vomit) were reliant on the goodwill of strangers acting responsibly, you would change your tune. I have no allergic members of my family but still totally understand the concerns of those who do and would make a small sacrifice to try and reduce the risk of harm to anybody.

wudubelieveit · 18/12/2023 21:42

Just to re-post as people aren't reading the previous posters message ,
From the AllergyUk website "No nut policy. Many parents and schools try to implement a ‘ban’ certain foods (such as nuts) from school premises. However, we do not recommend a ‘no nut policy’ in schools, as it is not possible to guarantee and enforce a nut free zone, as staff cannot monitor all lunches and snacks brought in from home. A free from environment creates a false sense of security and does not safely prepare children for environments where nuts may be present. The school* *would need to consider other children with different food allergies and it is not practical to restrict them all. Therefore, the school should have procedures in place to minimise risk of reaction via cross contamination. "

This. Diabetics and gluten free can probably only find nuts suitable for them on a flight, if they don't take their own. So yes, everyone should be notified in advance.

Imagine being told to get real and grow up be sure you're worried your child's deathly allergy will kill them.

What an absolutely bizarre response!

Fiveinthebed22 · 18/12/2023 21:48

This has made me never want to fly again. I would probably die if I was in a row near you, even with an epipen shot as I'm so severely allergic. If the nut allergy sufferer had stood up when the announcement was made, and apologised but said they could die - would you still have eaten them?

I ask as I've debated doing this myself, wondering if it would make people less selfish.

Illbebythesea · 18/12/2023 21:52

@fitforflight i guess the school class them as nut as they didn’t allow her to eat it. But went my other dd to nursery with the same pasta and they have a no nut policy but allowed her to eat it. God knows!

mummymathsteacher · 18/12/2023 21:52

Not sure if this is reassuring or not, but my allergy doctor said that almonds allergies are the least common nut allergy. No idea if that is true, but it does seem that peanut allergies are more common that almond.

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/12/2023 21:54

Yes DD is allergic to walnuts , pecans, peanuts and hazelnuts but we have to avoid all nuts as the proteins are so similar so she’d never eat an almond.

YireosDodeAver · 18/12/2023 21:54

Illbebythesea · 18/12/2023 20:52

Pesto pasta. Got sent home with dd because of the pine nuts. I didn’t even think…

Pine nuts are a seed not a nut. The vast majority of people with nut allergies will have no problem with pine nuts.

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/12/2023 21:55

Yes but most pesto is made with cashew.
