For those that don't get masses of time off at Christmas (lighthearted)

Does anyone else get seriously fucked off with the shock and horror that people express when asking about your Christmas plans and you explain you are either working or feeling lucky to have a couple of days off.

No, I am not looking forward to a break. I love Christmas but it's knackering, having most days that I am off packed with various activities and family to visit.

No,I really can't meet up, I am at work.

No, we can't meet up at lunch. I am working, really.

No, I am not winding down, I am soo busy and worried about getting what I need to do.

I love them all dearly, I know they don't get it and forget others work arrangements. I also know I am stressed, but it's the same every fucking year.

Anyone else?

I'm with you. I work in cash apps and it's our busiest time. Last year I had a couple of days off in between but this year I'm working all three

Well it pisses me off when my own family express surprise even though I've worked over Christmas for TWENTY FIVE years!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nomorecoconutboosts · 18/12/2023 20:17

Same
I’m a nurse - I have low tolerance for people who moan they have to ‘work Christmas’ what they mean is they have to go in for 1-2 days between Boxing Day and NYE

i really am working Christmas. 25th, 26th, NYE 12 hour shifts.
On the plus side I am cooking the dinner on 24th so that’s the hard work over and done early!

After Boxing Day I have 3 days to drink Baileys and eat my body weight in chocolate.

Yep some people seem to think they should a week off before Christmas through to some time in mid -January.

I suppose that's what happens if you start going on about it from August onwards. Expectations are crazy.

Makkacakka · 18/12/2023 20:22

Yes. I'm fortunate to get 5 days off this year but only because I'm now part time. The most I've had off over Christmas in 12 years (not counting the year I was on maternity!). Done my fair share of Christmas days (although I am lucky that I get to choose which bank holidays I work.. but we are expected to do at least one of Xmas, boxing or NY day)

Yes, I have been working in the same industry for over. 20 years, nothing has every changed, but every bloody year.

Yes! Working a megre 8 hours Christmas day, but 12-13 NYE and NYD, plus shifts in between.
"can't you take the day off"? No
"Surely you aren't needed Xmas day?" the person I care for won't suddenly develop capacity or walk for Christmas day- so yes! They do need me
but what about your kids?" they have 2 capable loving parents. 1 is working, the other will be with them* yes, I'll miss them, but no- the world will not end.

rickandmorts · 18/12/2023 20:31

Yes, working in a supermarket. Customers 'are you all ready for Christmas?' Erm no because I spend all my time here ensuring you're ready for Christmas 🤣

Rowgtfc72 · 18/12/2023 20:38

Yup. Do I have plans for Christmas? No not really, I only get Christmas day off.
I do a very important job- I package your prawns😁.in boxing day and new years day.

FlyingCherub · 18/12/2023 20:42

I worked in care for years, and can't tell you how much I now love working in DH's business where we get a full 10 day break over Christmas. Our staff use some of their holiday, and apart from a week in March, it's the only time off we've personally had all year. I literally cannot wait.

I did always enjoy working Christmas day as everyone was cheerful and the shifts were really quick but Boxing Day always meant lots of phoning in sick from certain staff and New Year's Day. Used to really piss me off having to work extra away from my family to cover people who couldn't moderate their alcohol intake....

Doyouthinktheyknow · 18/12/2023 20:47

Yes, it does mildly irritate. Similar to someone else, I’ve been nursing more than 20 years and my family are still surprised I’m working!

TBH I quite like this time of year as most people do take time off and my inbox is less frantic!

I have bank holidays off now in theory but still find myself plugging gaps and have the mentality of ‘what will I do with all those days’ so end up picking up bank shifts🙈

I always do this now and I love it, you only need to take a few days of annual leave if you don't usually work bank holidays and weekends to get a decent break. I did over a decade of shift work though and used to always work over Christmas.
