Nominated Pharmacy Question

lololove · 18/12/2023 11:58

I have an ongoing condition and new meds have caused an allergic reaction and hospital visit this weekend

I'm currently waiting for a triage call back from the GP that is still booked for 9am which is stopping me from ringing a pharmacy to request the answer 😂🤦

The nominated not chain pharmacy is not the nearest to the doctors surgery but it is the one that deals with my repeats and medication delivery each month. There are 2 between doctors and my house which would be much easier in this case. Unfortunately they refuse to give paper scripts when you have a nominated pharmacy.

Is it possible to just show the app with the barcode and collect it from another pharmacy? Google doesn't have the answer and like i say I don't want to risk calling a pharmacy only for the doctors to finally ring to give me a face to face appt 😂

Thank you!

Yes it is if you can get to it before the other chemist dispensed it. Alternatively ask for a one off nomination to the other chemist.

TinselTitts · 18/12/2023 12:03

No I don't think so because when I go to my nominated pharmacy, my meds are there, ready and waiting in a bag on the shelf.

When you do get to speak to the GP, they may be able to have it sent specially to the nearer one though.

lololove · 18/12/2023 12:06

Thank you, i appreciate it. There should be a little leeway with the dispensing as it is a very popular and very busy chemist that takes some getting hold of and the boots chemist is literally around the corner from the doctors so all of a 5 min walk as long as they hdve it in

Can you go on the nhs app? I can access my details and change nominated chemist with a click, this might be the easiest option for you.

Soberfutures · 18/12/2023 12:15

You can phone your nominated pharmacy and ask if they get it to tell you the barcode and then ask them to return it to the spine.

Then u can go to any chemist and give in the barcode and they can then dispense it.

If the pharmacy has already dispensed it they can still put it back on the shelf and return it to the spine.

TheSparkling · 18/12/2023 12:16

After the script is issued electronically, contact the nominated pharmacy and ask them to return it to the spine. Then go to the new pharmacy and show them the barcode. They will be able to download it then.

Alternative you can ask the issuing GP to send it to the spine or as a lone off to the new pharmacy. This will depend on the competency of the GP as to whether they will know how to do this.

Riverlee · 18/12/2023 12:18

You ask the doctor to send the new prescription electronically (eps ) to another pharmacy.

Thank you lovely but I'm a little loathe to even try and change the pharmacy even if just for today incase problems start as I'm on a lot of repeat medications and rely on the other pharmacy delivering them for me each month so changing could be catastrophic otherwise it would be ideal x (other place has known 4 generations of my family over the years so knows our care better than the doctors!)

This is correct - once the GP has sent the prescription to the pharmacy it belongs to them. You have to ask your GP to cancel that prescription and send it somewhere else (or print it out for you to collect from the surgery).

AnchorWHAT · 18/12/2023 12:21

Ah fair enough, I recently changed to Lloyds online who deliver mine every month through the post. They send a helpful reminder too to alert me to reorder.

Soberfutures · 18/12/2023 12:24

The gp does not have to cancel it. The pharmacy that receives it can easily return it to the spine so it can be accessed in any other pharmacy.

The only time this is not possible is if it has been emailed over. And that is usually done by out of hours/111

As long as they return it to the spine you will be fine. Even if they don't give you the bar code you can still trace it. (Pharmacy assistant here)

This is wrong advice sorry this is to @TheOccupier

Edited

If you also know them well then they will have no issue returning it to the spine. This won't affect your nominated pharmacy for the future prescriptions

lololove · 18/12/2023 12:31

Thank you @Soberfutures , running on little to no sleep for 2 nights and in a lot of pain with limited neck movement so not having to taxi across town to the other pharmacy at what is seeming like it will be kids home time from school at this rate (still no call 😂) would be a massive help.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

Unbelievable I had this exact situation recently and the pharmacy and GP receptionist both told me it had to be cancelled and reissued from the surgery, which was a massive hassle! Am fuming now! Sorry for the bad advice :(

This will only be the case if they sent it by an email. As there is no way to return it electronically as all the pharmacy do is it print a copy from the email and use that to dispense the medications. The original prescription will be posted to the pharmacy at a later date for them to submit to claim for payment. Maybe this is what happened to you? (Hope I didn't sound too abrupt to your reply)

TheOccupier · 18/12/2023 14:33

Not at all @Soberfutures, I appreciate the advice! Thank you :)

Soberfutures · 19/12/2023 15:31

@lololove how did u get on?

Soberfutures · 19/12/2023 15:31

@lololove how did u get on?

Sods law to be honest. I asked the question expecting to need the answer... Only to not 🤦😂 but I have booked it for next time as it will come in handy so thank you very much!

It turns out the thing that a and e said it was and had treated was not actually the problem and that it appears something else is causing it so a whole host of blood tests to try and narrow it down and no meds prescribed until hopefully the blood tests shows what it is.

I was fully expecting it to be case of 'ah, it's still happening so we'll extend this treatment and off you go!'

Thank you again m'love!
