We don't exchange presents with adults /brothers SIL etc, just buy for kids - nephews and nieces.

But my lovely, lovely SIL is newly split up and I wanted to give her something. Will see her kids next week and can send something back for her to open. She and kids going on holiday for Christmas, so I thought I'd buy a book.

Found one on Saturday, looked good dsytopian setting, based around the effects of an extreme education system. I opened in randomly and thought it read well. (called Q by Christina Dalcher for anyone who knows it?)
Came home and had a closer look, First line is - How long do you stay in a bad marriage for the sake of the kids? And the book is not only about this dystopian society, but also tracks the downfall of her marriage!!

So, bugger, can't send that.

She is a serious reader, probably read all the major releases of 2023. Would read things like the Booker prize winners.

What can I get her that is a little more obscure, so she's less likely to have read it, and which is NOT a romance or about a marriage??

I have amazon prime, need ot order by tomorrow.
Help mn please!

My book club read Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel earlier in the year which we all really enjoyed. It's not new - written in 2014 - but remarkably prescient as it deals with a current-day pandemic and its effects on the population. But it's not at all doom and gloom - it's life-affirming and a testament to human resilience, and the ending is full of hope.

Sweet sweet revenge ltd or anything by that author. His books are light hearted and silly, but very funny and she sounds like she could do with a laugh. The last one, 'the prophet and the idiot' is also good. My other suggestion would be 'death and croissants' or 'murder and fromage'. I may have confused the titles slightly. They're easy enough to find on Amazon.

Have a look at Ocean Sea by Alessandro Barrico. It’s almost like a mystical fairy tale but is a brilliant book with v amusing characters.
