Tooth pain but no tooth!

Can anyone shine any light on what I'm going through? About 16 months ago I had a molar extracted. It healed up as expected and I was pain-free, hooray. But over the last few months I've started to experience pain coming from the extraction site. The pain feels like it is inside the socket and varies from a dull to intense throbbing sensation. It hurts all the time and is no better or worse when eating on it. The socket has healed up fine (according to my dentist when I last saw her) but I just can't understand where the pain can be coming from if there is no tooth there anymore! Has anyone experienced this before? Any dentists out there who can shine a light? I guess I'll need to try tomorrow and get an emergency appointment which is incredibly difficult 😢 but the pain is getting me down. Thanks in advance for any advice. Googling hasn't shone any light.

Abscess?

Toothache is so painful, it’s sometimes hard to locate where the pain is coming from. Is it possible that it is the tooth adjacent to the gap that is a problem?

Quarterofanonion1 · 17/12/2023 16:31

It feels like it is inside the socket and there is no sensitivity when I eat or drink with the adjacent teeth. Also, the gum/ socket looks fine, no swelling, blood or pus which I might expect with an abscess. Such a mystery 😢 I'm so stressed about trying to get an appointment it's always a nightmare and I've already had to go private as my NHS dentist closed down after covid so the cost is a worry too.

Could it be bone spicules? Not uncommon after extraction, my DM had them and found them incredibly uncomfortable

YellowWiggle · 17/12/2023 16:52

is this in your upper or lower jaw?

Quarterofanonion1 · 17/12/2023 16:59

Yes maybe bone spicules? It's upper jaw.

I hope you got it sorted.
I sometimes get upper toothache pain but it is actually sinus related!

buonnatale · 18/12/2023 16:25

Was going to say; have had similar and it's been sinus related.
