I’m curious to know how regional this is?

Also if we’re ranking pakora then cauliflower is the best followed by mushroom.

The most amazing pakora used to be in a restaurant in Bishopbriggs. I think it was called the Gulnar Tandoori but it was a very long time ago!

OhpoorMe · 17/12/2023 14:08

Yes but called pakoda!

BarbaraofSeville · 17/12/2023 14:09

Loads of places in Leeds sell them.

Chicken, fish, vegetable, mushroom, cauliflower.

My favourite is potato, sliced potato in spicy batter, but only a few places do them.

The Kitchen Cabinet podcast talked about the history of them in their recent Glasgow episode

Lots of Indian food takeaways are actually often Pakistani or sometimes Bangladeshi owned and made. So you can tell by the food and the taste will differ

No not at the high st one but they do at the more authentic place in the precinct and at the ones in the more diverse part of the nearby city.

PaulaPocket · 17/12/2023 14:18

Mina Road, Bristol: Pakora: Chicken tikka, vegetables, paneer or fish mixed with a special sauce and deep fried. Served with mint sauce. £3.95 each.

gotomomo · 17/12/2023 14:19

My favourite snack is bread pakora - it's white bread with potato curry between dipped in chickpea batter and deep fried, we won't discuss the calorific content!!!

clare8allthepies · 17/12/2023 14:21

Here in the south west I can get pakora but it’s nothing like you can get in Glasgow. I really miss the range of pakora they have up there, not to mention the pink pakora sauce and luminous red spicy onions!

clare8allthepies · 17/12/2023 14:22

Also the pakora bar in Edinburgh is fantastic!

Libertyy · 17/12/2023 14:24

Also make it yourself it’s so easy

I remember that place!

That was the first place I thought of as well!

@SisterMichaelsHabit I got pakora in Kathmandu in the 90s, as a Glaswegian missing the taste of home I was delighted!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 17/12/2023 14:31

I've only been able to get them in Scotland.

If down south usually have to resort to ordering bhajis.

stargirl1701 · 17/12/2023 14:33

Perthshire - yes.

OhChristmassTree · 17/12/2023 14:36

North Yorkshire. Yes my local one sells chicken or fish pakoras.

We live in a large West Midlands city (not Birmingham) It would be very odd if any Indian/Pakistani restaurant or take away didn't. 🤔

The one I lived next door to didn't, I was fuming, love my pakora

idontlikealdi · 17/12/2023 15:45

Only had pakora when I was at uni in Scotland. Not a thing down here.

HashtagShitShop · 17/12/2023 15:50

Lincolnshire east coast, yes. Chicken, veg, fish. I adore chicken pakoras 🤤

I've seen a couple of supermarkets do them but they're not great.

RumNotRun · 17/12/2023 15:56

We get them here in Cardiff, in some places they're listed as bhaji pakoora or bhaji/pakoora so perhaps they're not always the same as elsewhere.

Mrsjayy · 17/12/2023 16:01

I don't understand why pakora would be regional what makes you say that? but yes where I live in Central Scotland all the reasturants and take away shops do pakora. Mt favourite is vegetable I also love cauliflower . I'm not keen on chicken and definitely not fish.

jay55 · 17/12/2023 16:27

East London, about 25% in my local area do.
(Just eat says 16 out of 62)

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/12/2023 16:48

Near Edinburgh, and yes. Defo mushroom anyway, not sure about cauliflower (don’t fancy that much tbh).

It really isn’t the standard thing in England that it is across (central) Scotland (at least).

BrimfulOfMash · 17/12/2023 17:28

It’s standard in every part of London I have lived in.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/12/2023 18:09

@Mrsjayy

The podcast I linked to above said that when 'Indian' restaurants and takeaways first opened, they tailored food to what would be attractive to the local market.

The ones that opened up in Glasgow offered pakora, ie deep fried battered items. It was very successful.
