Tell me your positive stories of avoiding a bug everyone in the house has!

Household down with D&V, apart from me who has had to clean up after everyone. First person started around 11pm Thursday. I already have a really bad cough so could do without this on top, I'm hoping the one bug in my system might see another one off. Also been rigorously washing my hands. Clutching at straws here though 🫣 tell me your positive tales!

To catch it you need to eat it (from surfaces , oral-fecal route or if someone vomits next to you and you swallow the spray) keep your hands away from your face and clean surfaces with a tablespoon of bleach in a litre of water spray - change every 24 hours. Leave on for a couple of minutes and wipe off

good luck 😊

oh also washing your hands doesn't kill it - it just washes it away so no need to use scalding hot water! Hand gel doesn't work either

No vomiting next to me which is a good start 😇 thanks for the hot water tip, although I'm certain I have already doubled my gas bill over the past couple of days with hand washing! Done quite a bit of bleach washing especially toilets. Used dettol spray on surfaces/light switches etc. Washing thoroughly before eating as well I'm praying I can avoid it 🤞.

DS had a D&V bug the last week of term before the summer holidays (it had been doing the rounds at school). I was at home with him everyday, cleaned him up, clothes, bedding etc as did DH.
Following week DD came down with it, cue another week of cleaning etc & yet miraculously neither DH or I got it all!
So it is definitely possible. Wash hands as often as possible; clean clothes, towels, bedding, etc regularly, clean out the sick bucket & bathrooms/toilets with bleach.

Tbh, I've never really understood this catching off household members thing. We've had numerous bugs over the years where one member of the household has it but no one else and we don't change over behaviour in any way.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 16/12/2023 19:57

Chuck all the towels in the wash on hot and issue the afflicted with their own hand towel that is washed every day. Do not share a bed with an afflicted one. Sanitise door handles and touch the flush of the toilet using a piece of toilet paper so that you don’t touch surfaces that the afflicted have . As soon as they are well enough to get out of bed, wash the bedding on hot.

Before husband and I lived together he caught norovirus from his flatmates and brought it to my flat. I didn't catch it despite looking after him for the next three days.

Thanks everyone! These are making me feel a bit better.

Make sure those who are ill are really good at washing their hands .

My dh and 2 DDs had covid over the last two weeks, then 2 colleagues I worked with Thursday tested positive Friday… so far I’ve avoided it. I’m assuming I’m incubating it until Christmas Day.

MoiraRoseVibes · 16/12/2023 20:32

Defo very easy to avoid! My kids are 10 and 6 and I’ve honestly never caught the same sickness bug as them.
also, a couple of years ago my whole family had Covid except me - and my youngest DD was sleeping in my bed when she had it fully blown! It’s not that I’m immune to Covid as I did catch it a few months after that. Good luck, OP!

RandomUsernameHere · 16/12/2023 20:37

If you've got more than one bathroom don't let them use your one. Dettol surfaces they have touched such as door handles. Hope you manage to avoid it!

Oh I do hope not! Thanks everyone for the positivity 🌟

I once completely isolated noro struck DP, constantly wiped everything down with diluted bleach, and two children and I didn't get it. Wasn't.t much fun for him though!

Gunpla · 16/12/2023 22:00

My DH and DS got Covid twice, I never got it. Last month I finally got it, we didn't distance at ask all we didn't think it was Covid. Neither of them got it.

Blinkityblonk · 16/12/2023 22:56

Isolate sick person. Wipe all handles with antibacterial spray. Get them to use one bathroom if you have two or clean your one a lot. I don't share towels, each person has own. Wash their bedding on hot. I've not got sickness bugs except once I felt a bit sick, mostly manage to isolate, hard if kids are little and need care though.

Blinkityblonk · 16/12/2023 22:57

I think Covid is airborne, sickness both air and surfaces, tailor to bug!

flosset · 17/12/2023 01:53

Me and my partner have been together 10 years and never caught the same bug or illness. We have obviously had lots of different things at different times but whenever one of us is sick the other goes into the spare room so I think distance and extra cleanliness is the key. We have moved this summer and the spare room is a building site so dreading this winter as won't be able to get away from each other lol

PostOfficeInTheCoop · 27/12/2023 17:46

Thought I'd update (after starting another illness thread 🙈) to say I avoided the stomach bug 💪.

We managed to avoid COVID from our two children by making them spend the daytimes in the garden, evenings and nights in their own rooms with laptops, and everyone wearing masks when moving around the house. I am vulnerable so we are very cautious. We did wrap them up warm for outside!!

ConsuelaHammock · 27/12/2023 17:51

My husband swears by a shot of vodka or whiskey if there’s a stomach bug in the house.

Helenahandkart · 27/12/2023 17:54

If your toothbrush is in the same room as their toilet, then consider sterilising it and keeping it out of the bathroom temporarily.
I managed to avoid norovirus when my DH had it.

Ozgirl75 · 27/12/2023 18:43

I’ve only ever caught a sickness bug off mine once and that was when I was changing the sheet which had been vommed on and it kind of flicked up towards me.
Mine have only had about 3/4 sick bugs in addition to that but I’ve never caught them. I bleach the loo and we all wash hands but apart from that I’m not overly cautious. I often sleep in the bed with them when they’re sick too!

BlueRidgeMountain · 27/12/2023 18:48

DH managed to successfully avoid catching every bug that comes into this house. I believe it’s mainly because the instant one of us comes down with something, he starts with “oh great, that’ll be me ill before the weekend”, followed by repeated checking for temperature/rash/any other possible symptom. After several days of telling anyone who will listen that he’ll be coming down with it any minute now, he invariably doesn’t. It’s almost like he’s willing himself to be unwell, and he’s almost disappointed he never had covid 😂

MyLibrarywasdukedomlargeenough · 27/12/2023 19:08

No towel sharing, they stay in their rooms.
