Live on my own - someone has switched oven on - all doors locked

Ok - I never thought I'd be posting one of these threads, but there you go! I also don't know what I'm posting for, tbh.

I live on my own in a large bungalow. I have two cats.

Was out this morning.

Spent afternoon sitting in bed, where it's warm - watching Youtube videos, writing Christmas cards, procrastinating ...

About 20 minutes ago went through to kitchen to feed cats, and immediately noticed light on in oven. No heat, just the light and fan on. Knob was in 7 o'clock position so very definitely turned deliberately - so seems very unlikely that it was caused by cat jumping around, and even when I had cats who could open doors and turn handles - which these ones don't - I've never had a cat turn the oven on. Cats have either been with me or out all afternoon.

Front and back doors both locked and keys in both locks. Both doors are fairly new - I've lost the spare key for back door but it's in the house somewhere. The spare key for front door is in key safe in garage and the number is known only to my son who's not here, and a trusted friend.

The loft hatch is bolted on this side, but there is another loft hatch in an extension I rarely use, and I've never actually looked into that loft or touched that hatch. However, anyone who was in that part of the house would need to come through a door which is closed and makes a noise when opened and closed, then walk past my bedroom to get to the kitchen.

I'm trying not to be freaked out.

The only other strange thing was maybe a couple of weeks ago, late evening. I was in bed, cats were both sitting on bed, and I heard a noise somewhere in the house. Just one noise - like something fairly light had fallen - so not a loud crash or thump. The cats heard it too - they both lifted their heads and looked towards the bedroom door which was ajar. It was the kind of noise which I would have blamed the cats for making, but they were both with me.

Fuck!

Give me reasonable explanations for how my oven could have turned itself on!

And, no I didn't turn it on myself and forget. I hardly ever used my oven before and pretty much never now as I have an air fryer.

Spirit Guides can be people who have lived and animals but also those who have always been spirit eg Angels, dragons, fairies. These mythical beings never lived in this world, anyway. We “see” them in that form but they may not actually look like that, it’s hard to explain. They are there to help us when we ask them to…they guide us in so many different ways.

For example we may keep finding a certain colour feather in our path or even in our house. Different coloured feathers have different meanings. They can be our relatives but not much of the time. It is not easy to explain on here. It would take reams of words! But they do not pretend to be what they are not.

With a ouji board, bad spirits can pretend to be related to us or pretend to be good ones with a helpful message for us. Only very experienced people who have been communicating with spirits for years are able to intuit false things going on with a ouji board. I wouldn’t risk it myself as I have only been in understanding of these things for a few years.

I picked up my knowledge through various sources but the first was a book “Ask Your Guides” by Sonia Chouquette.

You’re not the lady who had the disappearing clock chains are you?

Crafthead · 17/12/2023 21:41

That's the thing with belief. You know what you think it is.

Landlord? Electric oven tripped then turned back on? Friend with key messing about

Sounds like a job for Danny Robbins & the Uncanny team.

I wondered if this and the other ‘someone is trying to get into my house’ thread we’re here as plants to whip up Uncanny interest!

The ignition for the burners is an electric spark, and in a power cut it doesn't happen. But the gas doesn't come out unless the ignition is going click-click-click, which it only does if the electricity is on. (My mother used to turn the electricity for hers off at the wall every night because she turned off all the switches at night to stop electricity from leaking into the room, and every morning my father would make cross remarks about the bloody thing not working to boil the kettle until he remembered and turned the wall-switch back on.)

I have just made sure I am right about that by switching off the wall-switch for my gas hob, and no gas comes out.

I always lived with gas hobs and all had a clicky ignition(right now in the new house the ignition button has to be pressed separately, but usually it was built in the knobs) and all allowed gas out so could be used in a power cut with a match. The only safety feature on all of them was that you had to press down on the knob when to be able to turn it. @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Maybe yours don't need to be pressed down?

Then it could be easy to turn accidentally I suppose and you need extra safety

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/12/2023 22:56

It was a damn nuisance when the gas oven's ignition spark ceased to work and it was not possible to use the oven because gas was not being delivered to the burner to be ignited with a match. And that was at some point in the early eighties, before we had children. (Thinking about it, that may have been to stop people putting their heads in the oven with the gas on but no flame: futile anyway, since North Sea gas wouldn't kill you the way town gas used to.)

I tried the experiment of turning off the electric switch for the gas hob, and I assure you that no gas came out when I turned and pressed the knob for one of the burners, so it would not have been possible for me to light it with a match. This Bosch hob would be about nine years old, I think.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/12/2023 23:05

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime some gas appliances do have built in safety cut outs, so an ignition failure causes them to self shut off the gas supply.
(known as a flame out sensor) This is a mandatory feature for all boat gas ovens and hobs which fall under the auspice of the boat safety scheme. However for households (bricks and mortar) the same rules do not apply. So you can purchase appliances with safety cut outs as your seems to have, or without a safety cut out feature. ( mine doesn’t have this feature). If I haven’t bored anyone enough, this feature can also be retro fitted to some makes and styles of hobs and ovens but not to all.

OK...I'm one of those crazy people who do believe in ghosts. It COULD be, or it COULD be that someone has access to your home. The good news is that cats tend to be very sensitive to both spirits and strangers in the home. Since yours was interested, but not upset, I'd say it was either a well-meaning spirit, or someone known to the cat. Is it at all possible that your son slipped in for something, not wanting to bother you? Do ask him if you have not,

I'd suggest changing your locks, as the more mundane explanation is almost always the right one. And it's worth it for your peace of mind.

Celia24 · 18/12/2023 02:06

Years ago I was convinced someone had broken into the house. I even called the police & they searched everywhere.

Looking back much later, I could see I had anxiety and depression which was leading to an overactive mind. I think we should always keep.out wits about us but also realise other problems may be at play

natlie77 · 18/12/2023 07:24

Frogers I watched a programme on it, they hide in your home andcl come out when your out.....

Kazz36 · 18/12/2023 12:17

Absolutely brilliant 🤣🤣🤣

Ifeelsuchafool · 18/12/2023 15:02

Never leave a key in a locked door. It is apparently possible, with the right tools, to turn it from the other side. I live alone and have sturdy bolts at the top and bottom of both front and back doors. To back up the locks.
Have no idea how the oven got turned on by anything other than a human though. Nor why anyone breaking in would simply turn on the oven and then leave!

Just out of interest, do ghosts do things like turn knobs on modern appliances? I would have presumed they carried on mopping the floor or pining for a lover or whatever it was that linked them to haunt that spot in the first place. I find it hard to believe they pop in to grab the remote and watch tv.

I have heard of things being switched on and off by unseen/unknown forces. Whether this is a ghost, poltergeist or faulty equipment I don’t know!

You're thinking of a residual haunting. That appears to be more like a video, where the apparition does the same thing over and over again, without variation. It seems as if the action imprinted, somehow, on the environment. Perhaps the person doing the action was under great stress. Perhaps there is another, unknown, reason for the "video clip" to happen. But the person in it has no volition, is aware of nothing...in fact, is not actually "there" any more than the person in the photo you carry in your wallet is actually "there."

But, an active haunting, with a ghost who interacts with its environment (to one degree or another) and can communicate with others is entirely different. And yes, they can affect the physical environment. Things can be moved, electronic devices can be turned on and off. Rocking chairs rock on their own. Noises, sometimes voices, are heard. And stoves can be turned on. Thankfully, that's rare. You haven't lived until you see a TV turn on by itself, look, and find that it is not plugged in.

Do they unstack the dishwasher? If they do please can they come round here, ta?

FFS here we go 🙄🙄

OP, you've either knocked against it, the cats have managed to do it or you did it in your sleep.

I've a feeling this thread will run and run and fill up with nonsense as they tend to do.

Please don’t dismiss another’s opinion.
You're entitled to yours as she is hers and hers is feasible. I have spirits and angels who come to me. Just because you don’t believe/like it doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Love and light 😌✌🏻❤️

My cats turn on my electric heater and my fan, walking over the switches, totally flummoxed the first couple of times it happened till I caught them at it
