Next Delivery driver asked me to meet him at co-op

Waiting for a desk to be delivered for DD. Currently putting a cabin bed together for ds2. Also have a wardrobe and chest of drawers to put together. Delivery driver from Next has just rung and said they’re parked at co-op and can’t get round the bottom of our road because of a car parked. So I can just meet them at co-op. I said we’re building a bed. He said it’s ok the driver has to take a 30 minute break now so they’ll be there for 30 minutes. I said no problem you can just come the other way round then.
Is this a new thing? I’ve paid for delivery but am expected to go round to co-op and pick up a desk myself???

Well if the road was blocked what do you want him to do? Maybe he doesn’t know the area and his sat nav doesn’t tell him the other route. You’re lucky he just didn’t skip your delivery. Seems good service to me, he’s trying his best. Not like he just can’t be arsed.

2dogsandabudgie · 16/12/2023 13:04

Perhaps his sat nav wasn't showing an alternative route.

mindutopia · 16/12/2023 13:08

I would message him alternative directions or go out and try to get whoever is blocking the road to move their car.

Littlebluebird123 · 16/12/2023 13:10

I thought this was going to be about him asking for a date. 🤣

MandyMotherOfBrian · 16/12/2023 13:15

Annoying if the road is blocked, but why can't he carry it from Co-op to you? If he thinks you can come get it yourself it can't be too big or heavy for one person so...

daisydalrymple · 16/12/2023 13:17

😂 no not a date 😂
satnav will show the route as it’s a complete circuit, so it’s obvious there’s another way to try, it just goes round in a small block. Just wasn’t expecting to pay for delivery then have to go and pick the furniture up.

Cheeky sod expecting you to go and collect it! If he thinks it's ok for you to carry home, why can't he carry it to yours?!

Same, although the Co-Op is not a very romantic place for a date 🤣

CormorantStrikesBack · 16/12/2023 13:43

Oh I missed it was a desk! Thought maybe it was a jumper 😁

hopesndrrm · 16/12/2023 13:56

I would do this for a small item, although would still find it odd. But for a desk? No chance!

So did I :-), an disappointed now.

I agree with a previous poster that his sat nav may not have shown the alternative route and - he only asked, that isn't a crime, and the op said no.

Terrribletwos · 16/12/2023 14:02

Yes, I agree with pp. After a 30 min break he can reassess the situation and come to you if the car is still there. You don't need to go to him as you have paid for delivery to your door.

Motnight · 16/12/2023 14:06

We had similar the other day from an Amazon delivery driver. I almost agreed to go and meet him until DH pointed out that the parcel being delivered was extremely heavy and neither of us would be able to carry it!

That made me laugh. I would also be a bit like that, trying to be helpful, until I realised I can't actually physically do it 😅

User2856948 · 16/12/2023 14:15

I also thought it was a date.

I would if it wasn't far and something small but a desk will be quite big and heavy even if a flatpack

rwalker · 16/12/2023 14:17

Ether explain the other route or he’ll probably just take it back and reschedule delivery

Rainbowshine · 16/12/2023 14:29

Does the other route have a weight limit or height restriction on it? In which case the vehicle they are using might not be able to use it. We have lots of restrictions on roads near us and we have to provide it in the delivery instructions when we order anything so they don’t rock up in an HGV.

There's no 'well, it's worth a try' with people not doing their jobs. OP paid for delivery. She has a right to expect delivery to the indicated location (her home) without being contacted by couriers trying to weasel out of their obligations.

If the roads blocked and he doesn’t know there another way then I don’t think he’s trying to weasel out of anything
easiest thing in the world would just to say rd blocked unable to deliver and take it back

he’ll be covering his arse I can guarantee If he carries it up the rd damages it or injures himself the first thing his company will do is blame him

i get that and the delivery driver is also entitled to take the desk back to the depot if he thinks he can’t get to her house. Even if he’s incorrect as there’s another way round. It’ll be no skin off his nose I guess.

LBFseBrom · 16/12/2023 15:33

The op was getting her goods delivered to her house, just half an hour later than originally intended. I go with the theory that the driver did not realise there was an alternative route. I have a lot of things delivered with no problem at all but I live on a well lit, fairly main road. Most of the courier delivery people are very efficient and want to oblige.
