Getting rid of a very heavy piano

We have a very very heavy old electric piano / organ of no value or use to anyone. How can I get rid of it? It’s too heavy for me to move or to want to ask friends to help with, and we have wooden floors so I’m keen it’s moved carefully.

My current plan is to rent a skip with an opening end, to hire proper piano movers to move it from in our house into the skip, and get the skip collected. Any better solutions?

Ask for a 'man and a van' on Facebook or similar for your local area. They will take away and tip it. Make sure they have a licence!

Is it not on wheels?

Out the window, just like in the old days 😁.

I like the concept here thank you - it’s definitely more than a one person move - took us four rugby players, quite a bit of manoeuvring and the most industrial heavy-duty sack barrow I've ever seen to get it in. I’m concerned that a man-with-a-van man will damage himself and / or our house on the way out.

No, not on wheels.

Just ask the professional movers to deal with it. The equipment is so specific, they’ll know all the procedures.

I would put it on local Facebook groups/gumtree/maybe contact some local music groups and say free to whoever collects? Surely that could solve your problem as it's the collectors problem to get it out the house?

WelshMoth · 16/12/2023 08:23

If it's had better days as a piano I'd take it apart but by bit.

That’s pretty much how we acquired it 😁

As @WelshMoth says, take it apart and then you can carry it out to a skip or into the boot and on to the tip easily.

I did wonder about this - do we think I’d end up with bits that are moveable or might I still be stymied by the resulting iron frame?

I would definitely try marketplace and freecycle I've gotten rid of a few heavy/awkward things that way, if someone wants it they'll find a few mates and a van.

We live in a very small cottage and our piano was long beyond repair. It was the only way we could manoeuvre it out. It was a lengthy job stripping it down and the frame had to carefully carried out but it meant that DH managed it ourselves. I think the cottage must have been built around the piano over 100 years ago!

A house clearance guy should be able to help. If it's off to the dump then how the actual instrument is treated doesn't matter, it's leaving your house undamaged that does.

Contact your local RAF Officers Mess - they love to burn them at mess do’s this time of year 😆

I was going to say this is the traditional way, ideally narrowly missing our hero to comic effect.

That is brilliant!

My mother let the teenage grandkids take it outside and destroy it with a sledgehammer. They had a lot of fun!

Rocknrollstar · 16/12/2023 19:01

You will find that people like the idea of getting a piano for free until they discover how much it is going to cost them to have it collected and delivered.

PlipPlopChoo · 16/12/2023 19:03

If the item is unlikely to be use to anybody then take a big hammer to the thing and get rid bit by bit in the wheelie bin.

Wear eye protection obviously.

Take the walls out and the roof off and then go home and have a cup of tea
