When was the last time you read a book?

I read Where the Crawdads Sing last summer (2022). I loved it but haven't been able to pick up a book since.
I really want to read again but I just need up being on my phone, regretful. Like right now.

I put the kindle app on my phone and leave it open. That way when I am flicking through apps procrastinating I am more likely to read a little when the kindle app flicks up on screen

MadamVastra · 16/12/2023 01:11

I have been a bit bored of reading so looked at some classics and am now reading/listening to my cousin Rachel Daphne du Maurier. It's so good!

ConstantRain · 16/12/2023 01:21

I've got so many books to read. On kindle and actual books but just can't seem to motivate myself.

Audiobooks any good for you? I ‘read’ in the car on my commute. Just finished Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead and it was SO well read as well as brilliantly written

ConstantRain · 16/12/2023 01:30

Actually I do listen to audiobooks in the car on my commute! They tend to be easy listening/reading types. Whatever is free on YouTube or library app.

I absolutely loved Where the Crawdads Sing! I've recently read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, which was a 'I can't put it down' book.

The sequel to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, All the Broken Places, was also a great read.

I find that once I've read a book I couldn't get my head out of, it's really hard to pick up another!

foxlover47 · 16/12/2023 01:58

I'm similar to you , I brought Peter James new book recently, always love his and still haven't picked it up to read ! I get to the time of night where I can sit down and read and end up scrolling on here etc on my phone

Britinme · 16/12/2023 02:06

I have an Echo dot in the kitchen and I listen to audiobooks on it every time I'm in there making dinner. I also have books on the go on my Kindle app on my phone and iPad (they sync) and I also usually have a paper book going (currently Kate Atkinson's "Transcription ", which is brilliant.

What got me back into reading was first reading the first few pages of each new book so I could put them in order of most excited to read - least excited to read. Then I told myself I’d just read for 15 minutes each night I was at home. Most of the time I’d then want to read beyond the 15 mins and I actually found myself a few times being excited to get home after a dinner out to carry on the story

I haven’t read for a couple of months because I was forcing myself through one where I disliked the main character so I just didn’t want to read it. But life is too short to struggle through rubbish books and I’m looking forward to starting my 15 mins of a new book next week

TheTecknician · 16/12/2023 09:17

I never really started reading, TBH. The few books I do have largely reflect my interests - civil aviation and music - but I haven't read any kind of fiction for decades. I've read a few Frederick Forsyth novels but that's pretty much it. My eldest sister, on the other hand, and her family are all real bookworms. They like Shakespeare too.

Justfinking · 16/12/2023 09:19

I stopped reading about 10 years ago ! I now only read if I go on holiday, it's really sad as I love reading. I find it easier to watch TV or scroll on my phone which doenst even make sense.

WillowTit · 16/12/2023 09:25

i read where the crawdads sing
and a man called Oto
but very rarely read now
i need reading glasses which i now have but never seem to have the opportunity or willingness to read

WillowTit · 16/12/2023 09:27

people donate books at work, which i take, i sometimes buy books from charity shops, i have a kindle app on my phone, i must make time

Thecomfortador · 16/12/2023 09:30

Probably 10-15 years since I read a book. Whenever mum got the message that I don't like reading.

Abhannmor · 16/12/2023 09:34

Same problem. I started heavy doomscrolling during Lockdown. Now I'd like to get down to a good book. Problem compounded by my boycotting Amazon , therefore no Kindle.

DeDoDaDa · 16/12/2023 09:46

I tend to buy a book, put it on my bedside table, give it a few weeks then buy the audio version 😂. I listen while walking the dog or on a long car journey.

Recent titles have included And Away (Bob Mortimer), Lessons in Chemistry, Tough Crowd (Graham Linehan) and Simon Schama's A History of Britain.

Olika · 16/12/2023 10:08

I keep going to library to get books but don't have time/energy to read them with 20 month old to take care of. I would love to get back to reading again but am just so tired by the time she goes to bed.

pharmachameleon · 16/12/2023 10:13

@Neitheronethingnortheother that's a great idea! How does it work though-does it sync with your actual kindle so you can read from both devices at different times?

It does sync across devices so if I pick it up on the kindle itself it knows where I'm up to

Having said that the issue was that I wasn't picking up the kindle so I tend to find I do the majority of my reading on the app on my phone instead

Omg me too… last time I read a book was around the beginning of the first lockdown… just haven’t been able to read since… I read online that it’s quite common but have no idea why. Used to be a real bookworm too - hope I get it back sometime 😕

Abhannmor · 16/12/2023 10:45

I have listened to some books on YouTube lately. Often ' comfort food ' like Sherlock Holmes , Agatha Christie . Ghost stories by MR James. Too often I doze off mind you.

Last book book I raced through was Tough Crowd by Graham Linehan. But that's a bit of a one off. I need to get into a genre of fiction really.

IHS · 16/12/2023 11:20

I'd love to be able to read again, but my concentration is so bad. I also become bored easily, so if a book isn't well written and immediately holds my attention then I just can't persist with it and it gets tossed aside. I blame my phone habit and I have adhd too. When I had adhd medication I managed to read my first book in years, but I'm no longer medicated.

kwetu · 16/12/2023 11:21

I love reading, just never seem to have the time these days.

pharmachameleon · 16/12/2023 12:18

@Neitheronethingnortheother thanks. I've downloaded the app on my phone and iPad and have used it already. It's great.

Britinme · 16/12/2023 12:25

Highly recommended for those who want a good series to start - "Just one damned thing after another" by Jodi Taylor, the first in the Chronicles of St Mary's series. Gripping and funny.
