What is the best restaurant you’ve ever eaten at?

Just ate some delicious pho for dinner and it reminded me of a tiny place a few streets away from my childhood home. (Rural, EU foreign country) There was a little Vietnamese family run restaurant and it was the most INCREDIBLE place. They didn’t speak anything but Vietnamese, and while my dad spoke a little, it wasn’t very good and most of the diners spoke none at all. There was no menu either, they had a card with vegetables on you could point at if you were a vegetarian, you’d sit and delicious food would just start appearing. It was always packed, and they never turned people away - if there were spare seats on your table you’d get budge up gestures and be joined by whoever just came in. I loved that place! We used to eat there every week as a family.

From what my dad understood, the couple who ran the restaurant moved over with their adult daughter who was some kind of wealthy banker, and they were supposed to be retired but they got bored so they started the restaurant. We later understood all the waiting staff were their grandkids and all spoke the local language perfectly well but the grandparents thought it was fun to bamboozle the locals Grin

My favourite regular place near us is The Olive Branch at Clipsham. Consistently lovely but not fancy.

The Fat Duck, L'Enclume, Gidleigh Park (Mochael Caines) and Northcote. The theatre of The Fat Duck was entertaining, I liked the food best at L'Enclume but the atmosphere at Northcote was amazing, such lovely attentive staff.

Your description of that little Vietnamese family-run restaurant sounds like something out of a fairytale. It's heartwarming to hear about a place where language barriers melt away over shared meals and gestures. Reminds me of a quaint café I stumbled upon during a trip to France. The owner, an elderly gentleman, spoke only French, but his warmth transcended any linguistic divide. We communicated through smiles and gestures, and every dish he served felt like a taste of home. If you ever find yourself in need of a cozy spot to reminisce over comforting food, I stumbled upon theborschtbelt.com/, which seems to celebrate such heartwarming experiences.

An amazing open air restaurant on the beach in Koh Samui, the freshest food ever.
Azimut in Courchevel which has a Michelin star was also very good.
also a very nice unpretentious French place down a back street in Lille, can’t remember the name but did an amazing steak and fried potatoes. Best steak sauce ever.

If I can add to my previous post this wonderful little French style bistro in Amsterdam in the Pipj - first went 6 years ago and then 3 weeks ago- run by a lovely Irish lady- amuse Bouches, lovely high quality service- it's small and you have to book- around £45 a head for 3 beautiful courses of just the right size

Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road - in the days when Gordon himself still cooked there and came out and chatted with us (so 20ish years ago). Just the most incredible food. And very happily for me, I wasn't paying (my ex paid - even 20 years ago, it was £1k each).

Trevaskis Farm in Cornwall, near Hayle. Not the poshest place by any means, but plentiful good food cooked well, rather than small amounts of food so tortured that is no longer looks or tastes like what it was originally and all piled up in the middle of the plate. Very nearly all of the food is grown or reared on the farm or sourced very locally. We would go and stay nearby just so that we could go back and eat there (if we could find anywhere...) And the bonus is.... They make their own desserts. Proper desserts and simply to die for!

Nando’s

Probably Le Gavroche. But also very memorable, a place called Le Grand Écuyer in Cordes- sur-Ciel in the Tarn region of France. My first experience of a tasting menu. A little preview of the next 3 courses on a tiny plate. Then the next 3 courses! Grin Absolutely gorgeous food. Perfectly served and portioned so you were beautifully satisfied, Food was all gizzards and duck etc. My favourite. Sadly closed now.

The French Laundry in Napa, California. Super fancy food, amazing setting, but very relaxed and enjoyable.

Adam's in Birmingham. My 50th birthday.

My friend has a fairly restricted diet so they made him his own menu (email conversation over a couple of weeks).

I've eaten at The French Laundry and many Michelin restaurants globally.

Lenclume is where I keep going back. It beats all other three stars, always different, always amazing.

Best lunch I've ever had was in a restaurant in Beirut, somewhere near the Achrafieh district, sitting outside in the sunny courtyard in early May, surrounded by pink and white Bougainvillea, drinking chilled Lebanese Rosé wine, eating the most incredible grilled meats, fattoush, hummus, kibbe etc.

Hardly any other customers, no rush to finish, just took our time. I'd be hard pressed to find it now, not that we'll be going back anytime soon 😕

Il Portico in Kensington.

The food had so much flavour. Service was perfect, friendly without being over the top and the owner came to chat to us.

this probably sounds quite poncey but a gorgeous little restaurant in Rome, off the tourist track and looked v unassuming but it was incredible- everything was so delicious and cheap.

Well aware I sound like one of the characters from Ripley here 😂

That’s such a wonderful memory. I was looking forward to reading similar back street finds and quirky family restaurants but the rest of the post reads like trip advisor 🙄

Aria in Sydney. The first time DH and I did a tasting menu with wine flight and the only time he’s ever eaten oysters. Amazing views over the Opera House.

Swordfish at a taverna on the beach in Mochlos, Crete. Never had it as beautifully cooked since.

JeysusH · 18/04/2024 06:52

I think setting is everything with food.

I was in the Bay of Naples last week had two stand-out feeds. One at the top of a mountain, in a hollowed out volcanic rock, farm to fork rabbit and a starter of whatever veg was good. Just delicious.

Second one, a restaurant only accessible by boat, enormous langoustine, the sweetest, great local wine, and the setting would have made anything taste amazing.

Nobu Riyadh
Blue Elephant Phuket

Nobu Riyadh sounds like the most overrated restaurant ever @mmgirish.

I haven't put my glasses on yet and read that as Asda in Birmingham. 😀

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2024 08:51

Best starter and main, The Connaught, about 30 years ago. Best pudding, at Anton Mossiman’s Belfry, same sort of time. Haven’t had better since.

It was fantastic. Why do you think it's overrated? Have you been to other Nobu restaurants?
