B'stard W.H. Smiths wrapping paper!

Just tried to wrap some presents for colleagues.

There are three long stickers on the wrap. You have to peel them off. Yeah, like it was ever going to come off in one lump! In the end I had to waste some paper by cutting under the bloody stickers to be able to get to the paper. You pay enough for it and then have to waste some!

Oh my word why is everyone so agitated by this??

They add a small amount of extra paper to compensate. You cut the roll to start.

It is a total non issue.

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 08:24

Most rolls they give you extra to make up for the stickered bit.
So a 3 metre roll is something like 3 metres with 30 cms extra.

Sainsbury's are doing this as well.

Yes! I’ve just bought M&S hoping it will be better

Dongdingd · 15/12/2023 08:26

! really ?everything else is shrinking and going up in price and they are adding extra wrapping paper?

dementedpixie · 15/12/2023 08:27

I know they have extra paper but actually getting purchase on the sticker and trying to peel it while it's shredding into a million pieces is time consuming. And it's even harder to try and get scissors underneath to try and cut it too.

amylou8 · 15/12/2023 08:27

I had this from tesco last year. Wrapping presents is painful enough without dealing with bastard wrapping paper. Thanks for the reminder I'll be seaking out the plastic sealed stuff this year.

Damnloginpopup · 15/12/2023 08:33

Paper laundering. I bet HMRC are on the case...

Slitheringheights · 15/12/2023 08:34

Tesco was like this last year, I don’t know about this year. It was very annoying. I got mines from home bargains this year. Still to start wrapping though. Will find out if there paper is any good.

TheCrystalPalace · 15/12/2023 08:35

I've had this with Sainsbury's too.
I wonder if there's a special department of people whose job it is to sit in a room and come up with ideas to piss off already-stressed people at the busiest time of year.

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 15/12/2023 08:38

I can fully recommend RSPB wrapping paper - it comes in compostable plastic wrap so no annoying stickers and it goes in your compost or food bin! The paper is also amazing quality (actually a bit difficult when you're used to the cheap stuff!)

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 08:38

The world:
"we need to use less plastic and save the environment"
Also the world:
"I have to peel off some stickers....wah wah wah"
🤣🤔🙄

@Needmorelego if you read the thread, you’d see that several people suggested more environmentally friendly non-plastic alternatives. Also your name suggests you’re not too fussed about minimising plastic use!!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 15/12/2023 08:54

Aldi has done the same but there is a little tab on each of the stickers you pull and it rips them open neatly then you can easily open the paper. It is harder but they are trying I suppose.

HumerousHumous · 15/12/2023 08:56

Desecratedcoconut · 15/12/2023 08:22

You don't get this shit with lidl wrapping paper. Cellophane packaging and it's thick enough to score the edge of a fold with a nail without ripping the paper.

Yes, Lidl's wrap is brilliant and it's only 99p. It's good thick paper that doesn't tear around odd shaped presents. It's wrapped in cellophane but tbh I don't care. The new sticky labels are infuriating!

BeverleyMacker · 15/12/2023 09:04

And wrapping paper not having the cellophane now means the rolls are all tatty even before you've bought them 🤦‍♀️Thank god Costco still have the plastic wrapper (for now).

Slitheringheights · 15/12/2023 09:05

Desecratedcoconut · Today 08:22
off to Lidl I go. Thank you

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 09:08

@MumblesParty I was being a bit tongue in cheek 🙂
Lego (the company) actually do a huge amount in research etc about plastic use and the fact that Lego lasts for decades is actually a good thing.
So - sticks out tongue 😛

Deathraystare · 15/12/2023 09:57

@Damnloginpopup

Yeah I know right? One year I did use brown wrapping paper. However as I was in Smiths I just thought "Right, one thing less to worry about". I am also crap at wrapping too. However no craft skills so could not make my own bags!
