recommend that you buy a second-hand DSLR to start off with. If you buy new, you will pay lots of money for a camera with lots of features that we don’t need at this stage. There are second hand camera shops and CEX outlets in the area that you could look at, but we tend to use eBay, Market place (etc) to buy our classroom cameras. Below I have added a little list of cameras that would suit, and rough price guides. If you buy on-line, make sure that the camera is coming with a lens (generally 18-55 lenses come with cameras), and a battery and charger. Quite often an older ‘high-end model’ will be better than a modern ‘brand new’ model. Cameras on the list below would all be very suitable for the courses, with the most basic and oldest models listed first, then ranging down to more advanced and newer models. The prices below would be typical online type sale prices that we would consider. They may cost more from a camera/second-hand camera shop (in store or online), but you would have a better chance of a warranty/service etc.
Canon 1000D : generally around £100 with lens
Canon 1100D: generally around £130 with lens
Canon 500D: generally around £150 with lens (450D similar but without live view)
Canon 100D: generally around £200 with lens (popular because it is a little smaller than the other DSLRs – a good choice) (200D later model)
Canon 600D: generally around £180 with lens
Canon 650D: generally around £220 with lens
Canon 700D: generally around £230 with lens (A great Camera)
Canon 750 D: generally around £300 with lens
The 600, 650, and 700D cameras are all really good and used a lot at A-level. Any cameras in the 60D, 70D, 80D are all appropriate but really the next level up.
There are other very good Canons (400D 40D, 50D in this price range but they don’t tend to have SDHC memory cards, so it is not always quite so easy to transfer images to a computer from these). If you spot, or are shown a really good deal, they are well worth considering. If you want to buy a new camera please let me know what you are looking at and we can advise.
If buying Nikon or another brand please do try to make sure it is a DSLR and that it takes SDHC cards. Nikon D3100 and D3200 models are great and can be picked up pretty cheaply.
We bought sons from CEX was a total bargain and came with carry case, traded in old tablets so really brought the cists down.
