Testing the lights on December 23rd, then having to try out every one on the string to find out which one had blown…

Frantically trying to find a shop that sold spare Christmas tree lightbulbs at 3.25pm on Christmas Eve…

Lugging the tree out to the garden on January 6th, and spending the next 2 weeks hoping it wouldn’t die…

Driving (or rather being driven) into London to see the lights on Oxford Street…

Walking home from school after the carol concert and peeking through the front windows of each house on your road to see if you could spot their Christmas tree…

Arranging all the cards from your schoolmates around your bedroom…

Any more?

Does anybody remember how jealous you would feel that last day ? No matter what you brought in (operation) . If someone had something you didn't have you'd feel jealous 'cos you didn't have one .😧

Actually thinking about that.........YES .
The envy was real 😂

bakedpotatoforlunch · 14/12/2023 18:14

Tins of Quality Street that really were big metal tins you could go on using for years. Quality Street chocs that were bigger, nicer (or is that my imagination?) some of which had paper "outer" wrappings instead of ubiquitous cellophane (I think it might be some more environmentally friendly wrapping this year)

Spangles in the selection box/stocking. My favourite flavour was cola although you had to watch your tongue on the last bits as they became a bit sharp! 😜

Yes to the Oxford Street lights, and looking at the window displays in Selfridges.

Lametta.

A metal whirligig chime thing with an angel on top that was turned by the heat of four tiny candles underneath.

Learning to play Jingle Bells on the recorder.

Glitter. Everywhere.

Paperchains that you had to lick to join the links together.

There was an amazing one of those whirly things on The Repair Shop last night.

I bought a much more humble one last year.

Vol-au-vents with Chesswood creamed mushrooms in.

I really really would like those back.

Tinned ham as a treat, yuck.

The Bond Film. Part of the television ritual following the Queen's Christmas Day message at 3pm

I was a child of the 70s/early80s- apart from the lights that always had a bulb missing the OPs list is not really what i remember. Mine would be:

Writing my Christmas list by looking through the Argos catalogue,
Hanging the cards on strings, around the living room walls with miniature pegs,
Plastic baubles covered in shiny satin threads, and reams of multicoloured tinsel,
Watching the latest film release on T.V. on Christmas day- Indiana Jones, E.T., Ghostbusters..etc.
Cutting out pictures from old Christmas cards to make gift tags,
The latest toys- Sindy horsebox and car, Pippa dolls, Evil Kaneivil, Etch-a-sketch, Tiny Tears,
Paper decorations handing from the ceiling by blueback (which fell down regularly)
Prawn cocktails for starters,
Santas grottos in all the toy shops (in fact, just toy shops)

Paper streamers, loads of them in various forms and shapes and lanterns - that were decked all
over the ceiling and round the tops of the ceilings (Way above picture rails), they also had foil ones of these.

In DM and grandad’s house and you could get them but usually sometimes in supermarkets or Austrian/german bakeries or in delicatessens, lebkuchen and stollen.

Trifle, so much of it, but my nana’s own recipe drenched in sherry!

stepintochristmas1 · 14/12/2023 18:21

I'm so glad my children got to experience looking at the world through a Quality Street wrapper . Feel so sad for kids that won't get look through them lol .
Also you can still buy 70's style paper decorations . Seen them online .

KingsleyBorder · 14/12/2023 18:21

I din’t understand why you’d hope the tree would not die in the garden?

(I was a child in the seventies and eighties. We only had artificial trees till the very late eighties, despite living in Scotland next to a pine forest!)

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/12/2023 18:21

Cardboard/paper advent calendars with no chocolates just the picture inside!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/12/2023 18:23

Angel Chimes - they had four brass colours angels that twirled round knocking a bell with a thin rod . There were candles (four candles like The Two Ronnies sketch Xmas Grin ) that propelled them.

I bought one from Past Times a few years ago so my DC could relive the experiences of Christmases gone by ahhhhh

Those garland streamer type things.

Huge selection boxes with massive chocolate bars.

Twirly Curls Barbie and Baby Skates. (two of my most memorable presents).

Christmas parties in infant school when a bell would jingle outside the classroom door signalling "a visitor" (probably still happens now but something that stands out in my own childhood).

The Wizard of Oz was shown every Christmas Day when I was a child.

Agreed with Wizard of Oz being shown every Christmas Day or at least it seemed like it!

Correction New Berry fruits

I still get these every Christmas for my Mum.

bakedpotatoforlunch · 14/12/2023 18:26

@stepintochristmas1 I sometimes used to wear a paper Quality Street wrapper as a ring after I'd eaten the chocolate. I had totally forgotten that. Thank you for jogging my memory from probably nearly fify years ago! 😀

faffadoodledo · 14/12/2023 18:27

My dear dad on his hands and knees checking each light and giving them a little twist
Lametta which we threw at the tree.
Those funny confectionary stockings which always had horrible Spangles in them.
Having an open fire and throwing nut shells and tangerine peel at it. And everyone howling with laughter when we all inevitably missed.

12thbirthhaygodzilla · 14/12/2023 18:27

The Rotary Club Santa on his sleigh being towed by a Volvo estate. For a small donation I always got a drumstick chew on a stick and a wave from Santa.

I remember how excited I was when I heard the Christmas music coming down the street.

I was going to say this too! It seemed so magical as a young child

Also, our local Debenham's had a room with moving paper, that looked like a sleigh ride to see Father Christmas.

The 6ft white tree, multi coloured lantern lights, silver "icicles" and a puffy, gold concertina bell on the ceiling

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/12/2023 18:28

Presents you made for aunts and uncles and grandparents. I recall printing and/or painting some sort of cork coasters (maybe from a set) and they had to act pleased to get them! Giving the women also “posh” Bronnley or other bath foam/soaps if you could afford it or whatever the local chemist sold and bath pearls. Getting bath pearls in return.

Riverlee · 14/12/2023 18:28

Climbing precariously on sofas and chairs to hang the streamers and paper chains up. I miss that we don’t do that anymore.

CatOnTheLap · 14/12/2023 18:29

@Lakeyloo oooh, I used to love Cinzano and lemonade when I was a kids. I’ve been teetotal for years but now I really want a Cinzano.

These decorations?

Oh my eyes! Memories though. My nana festooned the whole ceiling and tops of ceiling walls with them plus the paper ones!
