Christmas feels a bit flat this year

I'm just wondering if anyone else feels a bit flat and not as arsed about Christmas this year , my family and quite a few people I know have said they just don't feel Christmassy this year and there are about half as many houses decorated this year in our street compared to last year .

It hasn’t felt very christmassy to me for a few years now. Lights and decorations in the towns where I live are abysmal and nothing like they used to be.
The shops start selling Xmas stuff from August/ September. Xmas trees go up in shops from as early as October, people putting their decorations and tree up as soon as Halloween is over (A lot of them in my area didn’t even wait for bonfire night to be out of the way this year before putting their tree up). Walking into shops in November and they are blasting out Christmas songs etc. So by the time it’s December there is very little build up anymore when people have been getting ready for Xmas for the last 2 months!!! It just doesn’t feel the same anymore.

The cost of living is curtailing everything I think. I was in The Range and spotted a small box of Lindt balls that I quite fancied for Christmas, but they were £4.75 so I didn't bother buying them. Will just stick to Lidl stuff. Can't even afford to go to Sainsbury's anymore.

I also feel flat this year and I’m usually really into Christmas. I think it’s the news here and afar just feels worse than ever.

My dc are all teens now and don’t seem as keen. I’ve actually asked around for some soup kitchen-volunteer stuff this year to keep myself busy and give something back.

It should be every four years then it might be exciting like the Olympics, but wouldnt be bothered if it didnt happen at all really.

We see Xmas in the shops from Sep Oct onwards its just not special. Trees dont need to go until Xmas Eve either make it more special and songs dont need to be blurting out carols and xmas songs in November either.

Stuckinarut23 · 14/12/2023 17:16

On our local FB page I have never seen so many people asking for food donations and help with presents. The price of things is just ridiculous, trying to pay the bills and weekly shopping is hard enough.

Yep it just gets earlier and earlier every year and it’s ruining the mood come December. People will soon be decking up in September and August before we know it. I just don’t get why people are so desperate to put up their tree as soon as Halloween is over

As an aside....how are all those people with illuminated homes paying for the energy? Electricity for my home is already costing an eye watering amount. No outdoor lights for us this year but inside we are just starting to feel Christmas!

They’re surprisingly inexpensive to run @JesusAndMaryPain

Yogachick · 14/12/2023 18:37

We lost our beloved dog in October, been ill or away since. Have no interest. Not even putting a tree up.

toepick · 14/12/2023 18:42

A lot of it is mindset

Get off social media and celebrate the fact that you have family and health (if hopefully you have these things)

The magical things about Christmas are free. Sounds corny but true

Time off. Lie ins. Kids excited etc

I got some chocolate from a Lidl I happened to be passing - there are usually none on the direct routes I use.

Best I've had in ages: didn't taste of that greasy, horrible texture like the brands currently polluted by palm oil.

NotFastButFurious · 14/12/2023 19:08

I’ve never been that big on Christmas but this year does feel particularly flat! My tree is still in the loft, I’ve barely done any shopping, couldn’t be arsed going to the office Xmas party, Xmas cards are currently glaring at me to be written…..bah humbug, I’m just looking forward to 2 weeks off work!!

auburnglow788 · 14/12/2023 20:14

I love Christmas but am not feeling too Christmassy this year - I'm trying though. I've put it down to tiredness, having a cold and work being difficult over the past few weeks. I think the relentless wet weather isn't helping much either. It's a shame as I'm the most organised I've ever been.

upinaballoon · 14/12/2023 20:19

Christmas starts on December 25th. Everything might look rosier then.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/12/2023 20:21

Because shops and certain people try to start it so early now that everyone is bored of Christmas before actual Christmas.

It's very sad.

upinaballoon · 14/12/2023 20:26

I wish the shops and cafes and restaurants wouldn't throw Christmas away on the afternoon of 25th. I wish I could get a turkey and stuffing and cranberry roll from the local eatery on 29th, when the season of Christmas is only four/five days old, but I bet I won't be able to.
Yes, cheaper to do it at home, but not too extravagant just to have a bap/baguette out.

Hbh17 · 14/12/2023 20:26

Well, it's not Christmas for another 10 days. Currently, it's Advent.
