What would be your 'life changing' amount of money?

What would be your life changing amount of money? I always read about and hear about people receiving a 'life changing' amount of money through inheritance, a lottery win or some kind of insurance payout and wonder how people measure it?

I have worked mine out and I have two figures - a life changing one off lump sum would be £11,912 - I would have £518 extra a month to play with and it would make a massive difference to my wellbeing (this is unsecured debt for my car and a loan leftover from divorce related destitution and it really stresses me out) I earn well though and our household income is good and I have a plan, so this will be paid off before I am fifty in 6 years.

To be debt free I'd need my mortgage paying off so £168,356 - this would be lifechanging because I could work less. Currently work FT, as well as freelancing and studying. You don't need to give approx circs/figures if you aren't comfortable - happy for you to say you'd need less or more than me. I am just interested to see if I am average?

£500k would materially change where we could live and make me feel fundamentally differently about the future. But £100k would make a change too.

ssd · 14/12/2023 12:02

Jeez anything at this stage would be amazing

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/12/2023 12:04

£50K would pay off our mortgage.

That would be a huge weight off.

Erby · 14/12/2023 12:06

Trouble is, no one knows what's coming. So although on paper I have enough money to go PT, in practice I have to keep working like an absolute dog because I don't have any safety net, and if I spend my savings/capital I'm done for, long term. So a 'life changing' amount of money is enough to live on for the rest of my days without worry. Hundreds of thousands, in other words.

600k would be life changing for me, I would complete all the planned home improvements and pay off the mortgage plus have an allocation for each DD for University / driving lessons / house deposit etc and 100k left for a comfortable retirement.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 14/12/2023 12:07

£100,000 as a lump sum would pretty life changing for me. But I mean if im fantasising I'd prefer millions ...

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/12/2023 12:07

Anything would be a bonus lol

Horrace · 14/12/2023 12:07

£147mil

Iloveraccoons · 14/12/2023 12:08

35k to pay off the negative equity on our flat so we can finally move into a house with a garden, 9k to pay off our car and 20k to pay off the unsecured loan from both of us career retraining in our late 20s so round up a bit... 70k would be lovely 😂

Ineedwinenow · 14/12/2023 12:08

400k to be completely debt free ( including mortgage)

500k to be debt free and the house finally renovated ( we bought a do-er upper)

100k to make our life easier

Any extra money even just a tenner to make me smile

BigHairyJobby · 14/12/2023 12:08

£350K would pay off our mortgage and allow us to complete the home improvements that we've had planning permission for. That would be life changing for us.

TomatoSandwiches · 14/12/2023 12:09

5.5 million

peppermintcrisp · 14/12/2023 12:09

3-5M

MagentaRocks · 14/12/2023 12:10

110k to pay off the mortgage. I could then give up work and we could easily live on my husbands pensions.

LoobyDop · 14/12/2023 12:10

500k would clear our mortgages and give us the choice between being very comfortable or selling both places and buying something properly fancy. I think we’d probably do the former.

furtivetussling · 14/12/2023 12:11

Probably about half a million. It would enable us to move somewhere a bit nicer, and fund our retirement.

idontlikealdi · 14/12/2023 12:13

£1m.

850k for a house so the kids can have a bedroom each and 150k for any works and to pay off any unsecured debt with a bit left over.

GreatGateauxsby · 14/12/2023 12:14

Such a good question!!!

It's awful to say but £100 or even £250k wouldn't materially change much due to how leveraged we are.

£550k would pay off the mortgage which would be HUGELY liberating as that £2.5k less pm.

£1.5m would do the mortgage private schooling/uni and let us retire at 50.

Feel slightly unwell at the £££ required but private schooling would be a large chunk £5-700k and for me at this point it's entirely optional

BorgQueen · 14/12/2023 12:14

£250k would be lovely, DH could retire and that money would see us through the 8 years to Pension age plus future proof the house with a new bathroom, a couple of new windows and new carpets throughout.
We would need a couple of million to really change things though, a bungalow for us ( they are double the price of houses round here) pay off DD’s mortgage, a nice little flat for my Sister.

Seagrassbasket · 14/12/2023 12:16

250k would make things a lot easier.
life changing - half a mill.

ActDottie · 14/12/2023 12:18

I always think £1m and when I play euro millions I always think I’d rather win the millionaire raffle rather than the massive £100m+ because I don’t know what I’d do with that much!

£1m would let us buy a house around £600k and then pay off our mortgage on our current house which we’d then rent out.

Then I’d probably go part time at work because we’d have the rental income and no mortgage.

I also think £500k would be pretty life changing as we’d pay off our mortgage and be able to upsize (basically do the above without a rental property).

Bells3032 · 14/12/2023 12:19

£5-10m. Be able to buy a lovely house outright and upkeep it so would be able to give up work

MinnieL · 14/12/2023 12:20

Mate I’d be happy with 500K😂

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/12/2023 12:21

I suppose enough to be able to buy a house outright to get out of renting.

DramaticBananas · 14/12/2023 12:21

Enough to pay off the mortgage. I'll do the rest!
