Horrible buyer on FB Marketplace - can they find me?

Selling an item on FB. Was priced very reasonably at circa £100, lower than similar items as I wanted to sell quickly. A large item which would need to be collected.

A bloke got in touch.
He said he could pick up today - great.
He said he wanted to do a bank transfer - not great. I said I would prefer cash.
He said he couldn't get hold of cash.
He asked for my bank details - I gave them to him.
I then got an email to my junk folder from a bank I had never heard of saying that they have withheld the transfer as I didn't have a business account.

He then starts ringing me.
I said the bank transfer had been withheld.
He then rings again, says he's paid another £100
He then says I need to pay £100 to his account and then £200 will be released to me.
I tell him this is not the usual way I sell things on FB
He then asks me if I am thick and insane.

This is the point I tell him I am not going to sell to him as he is being rude.

He tells me he can't get his money back. I've told him I am not comfortable with this transaction and think it could be a scam..... He calls me more names.

Can he find out where I live? Can he defraud me as he has my bank details?

Is this a normal way to do bank transfers these days and I am just a dinosaur?

Report to FB and block. He won be able to find you

Wemetatascoutcamp · 13/12/2023 21:55

OP please report this on the action fraud website. As he gave you bank details they’ll be able to get the account he’s using blocked and hopefully stop anyone else falling for the scam.

This is incorrect. Fraudsters can do a lot with bank details! Don't ever give your bank details out to strangers. If someone wants to pay you electronically, insist they use Paypal so you have some protection.

Nope. PayPal can - and regularly do- make refunds to buyers and will take the money from your account to do so.
All he has to do is claim he didn't receive the item.

The Paypal Buyer/Seller Protection doesn't apply if the money is transferred as a 'gift' (personal payment) i.e. to avoid paying fees on either side so as long as this is what he did (and highly likely to avoid the fees), he would have zero comeback on the OP and Paypal wouldn't have given him his money back. Nor would the OP have revealed her bank details.

He may target you using that, but unless you're very lucky, it's already on a gazillion spammer lists anyway. You might find yourself signed up to some more, or he may be stupid and send you direct threats.

If he actually threatens you via email, then you get the police involved, I'd say.

In future - have a burner Gmail address or Hotmail or something, that you use just for this sort of thing, for one off contacts. You could use a new one for every single occasion. Never look at it again, shut it down. Keep your regular email safe.

Make sure you change the password on your email and tell your bank that it was a suspected scam. Well done for not falling for it
