What's happening to my DC?

5 and 2, usually lovely, usually sleep through, usually have lots of fun together.

For a couple of weeks now they've been getting increasingly difficult! They were each up 4 times last night, argue constantly.

My 5 year old is always so loud, even when happy, she only seems to have one volume setting, it's exhausting!

She will constantly pick something to have a meltdown about (Mostly about clothes. She will moan, complain and scream about it all the way to school even though she was perfectly happy to wear them just last week). She can also be quite rude too which is new.

My 2 year old is so clingy, will be lovely when she has my full attention, otherwise there is a meltdown.

Is it the time of year? Is it normal and I had it easy up to now? Is this my life forever? Help!

I'm struggling to keep up at work with the disturbed nights as it is, let alone the challenging behaviour as well. We were all so happy before!

End-of-term-itis. They're exhausted, it's the end of a long, dark term. They're tired plus over excited at the thought of Christmas.

I hope so! I need it to end soon and have my lovely DC back!
They have finally exhausted themselves thought it seems, both were out like a light before their usual bedtime, went to bed with no fuss or tears.
I'm quickly going to get some shut eye before one of them wakes me up again!

Exactly this. My five year old is like a demon at the moment and if I hadn’t seen this movie before with his big sister, I’d be seriously worried!

This half term specifically is the one we've learned to brace ourselves for each year.

There's no routine at school/in life. Loads of Christmas events getting thrown in here there and everywhere.

Crowds and songs and lights all over the place.

Anxiety/excitement sky high.

Passthecake30 · 14/12/2023 07:11

Are they run down, do they have colds? That can make anyone moody.

CrikeyMajikey · 14/12/2023 07:29

End of term exhaustion. My DC used to get styes in his eye about 2 weeks before the end of term or half term. I also used to give them multi vitamins from October to April, it seemed to help.

DinkyDonkey2018 · 14/12/2023 07:37

Thank god I'm not the only one. Mine has been incredibly irritable this week and her teacher did say that you usually find the last 2 weeks of school they'll be rather ratty because they're exhausted. Roll on Christmas break!!

Does this end of term phenomenon also stand for stroppy pre teen boys??? I'm having a horrible time with mine just now 😞

This, I was going to ask are they both in school? There’s so much going on in my children nursery/primary that they’ve only worn their proper uniforms twice in 2 weeks, there’s been an event every day. They’re over excited and exhausted

OneMoreMyWay · 14/12/2023 09:14

@Whiskyfromsmallglasses if mine is anything to go by, yes! My Yr6 and Yr 7 both have tests in pretty much every subject this week and next week too - to round every topic off before the end of term. And they need to make sure all projects and workbooks are finished/up to date. They're both counting down the days!

CrazyTimes4 · 14/12/2023 15:25

Gosh, so many of us, sending sympathies!

Yes the eldest (the worst of the two) is in school. I went to her nativity yesterday and there were quite a few children looking exhausted, overwhelmed and having meltdowns so I guess that makes sense.

Just don't understand why she won't sleep if she's so tired! I'm a zombie today after the worst night we've had since she was a newborn!

It is nearly the end of term and children everywhere are overstimulated, overwrought and overtired. It is the same every year coming up to Christmas.

comfyoldcardi · 14/12/2023 15:30

Have you never been so overtired and wired up that you can't sleep? It is very normal, especially in children.
