Liking children’s things as an adult

As a child I loved things like Flower Fairies and Brambly Hedge, but was never allowed them as my mum didn’t approve (very much not her aesthetic).

The problem is that I still love them, despite being a lawyer in my 40s with kids and a large mortgage.

Very tempted to buy some books. Does anyone else do things like this? Don’t want to end up a mad old lady in a house full of dolls and doilies 😂

Do it. One of the joys of adulthood is that you can just buy yourself stuff that you want.

JaneJeffer · 13/12/2023 17:15

It's just cottagecore innit?

TM1979 · 13/12/2023 17:15

One day I will buy myself a sylvanian families house and lots of figures!

FloweryName · 13/12/2023 17:17

I’m the opposite, my mum loved the flower fairies and was always trying to get me to play with them but I preferred things like the much less tasteful Rainbow Brite.

To actually answer your question, go for it! You can do what you want. I still love children’s literature, Disney movies and cuddly toys.

Viviennemary · 13/12/2023 17:18

My Mum didn't like pink. She said it was too girly and pale and have to be washed all the time. hence I wasn't allowed anything pink. Now I do like the occasional pink thing like a scarf.

njg616 · 13/12/2023 17:20

Sometimes I go through the toy pages in the catalogues and oggle toys I loved as a kid.

I still love tamagotchis and start them up again a couple of times a year. I'm 38 haha

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/12/2023 17:20

I bought myself a complete set of Flower Fairies books just because I am an adult and I can. Dd has snaffled them which I think shows excellent taste because the fact is they are very beautifully painted.
I got a pair of Flower Fairies mugs back when I lived on my own and my house was burgled, as part of making it feel like my own place again.

My SIL is into the Moomins - different aesthetic but similarly an adult appreciating art that was done for children.

Mil is a mad old lady with a house full of dolls, which she thinks is because she was a wartime child with parents who had no money to spare for toys, and I don’t hold it against her!

Jasmin1971 · 13/12/2023 17:21

My DH and I buy each other Living Nature plushies because we love cute animals, we have conversations with them and they have their own settee. Go for it, I loved being childlike in middle age!

Cryingbutstilltrying · 13/12/2023 17:21

Of course. I have a fine collection of Sylvanian families. Dd likes them but it’s me who actually collects them and arranges them. Dh likes to make up jokes using them in the style of some of the funny Instagram forest friends posts, I think we definitely get more out of them!
Its harmless and would make you happy, absolutely get them!

RagamuffinCat · 13/12/2023 17:21

I still buy myself most of the new Jacqueline Wilson books to read. They only take a few hours now but sometimes it is really lovely to read something that doesn't need much concentration, and I love the way she writes.

MooQuackNeigh · 13/12/2023 17:21

My oh collects 80s arcade games and consoles including the giant fridge freezer sized ones. We built are garden studio especially. This is all on the back of gold memories of the arcades of his childhood.

I have a collection of that wonderful cheesy teenage fantasy books animorphs etc al.

Go for it.

Needmorelego · 13/12/2023 17:22

@DuvetCovers see my user name 🙂
Lego is my big thing and I do tend to go for small sets like City and Friends and build scenes and give back stories to the figures rather than buying the "18+" sets.
If I had the money and space I would love to collect Sylvanian Families and design doll houses for them to live in.
I love children's books. I am currently collecting Puffin Classic books and picking up copies of books I never read as a child. Some modern editions are beautiful. I bought a copy of The Rescuers just the other day from The Works.
I absolutely adore Brambly Hedge. They are fantastic.
So what if you become a "mad old lady in a house full of dolls"? All that means is I would find you a really interesting person and you would become my best friend and we can go to car boot sales together to look for Sylvanians 😂

Icantbedoingwithit · 13/12/2023 17:22

Do it. I bought all the Enid Blyton books and I love them!

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 13/12/2023 17:23

Op I love things like this too!

I don’t buy any more stuff - I have kept children’s books - but I do follow a website on Facebook that’s called “For those who have kept their child soul”.

Also, you must visit the brilliant IndiaRoseCrawford on Instagram!

SpacePotato · 13/12/2023 17:23

Buy them.

I've just bought myself a jellycat snowman teddy because I loved it.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/12/2023 17:23

I was Christmas shopping today and as a 43 year old woman I can totally see the appeal of shops like Smiggle and Lush. I love all of it, the smell of the plastic, all the bright pretty colours. Having matching water bottle, pencil case, keyring, lunchbox etc. Smiggle in particular is hideously expensive for what it is, but I was seriously tempted to buy myself a florescent pink unicorn backpack with gold sequins. I didn’t, I’m not a lunatic but I can see how kids go in and want it all.

Gloriousgardener11 · 13/12/2023 17:23

I always wanted a dolls house like my cousins, but needless to say, I never got one.

I did, however, buy my daughters one but they weren’t very interested. So much to my delight I got to play with it instead!
I’m over it now 🤭

MooQuackNeigh · 13/12/2023 17:23

And yes yes! to plushies. I love all the unusual ones. I have a giant ladybird, a duck billed playpus, a highland cow. My children keep trying to claim them but my glare keeps them at bay for now.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 13/12/2023 17:23

@Icantbedoingwithit same! A bit of magic faraway tree helps on a shit day.

ToriTheStoryteller · 13/12/2023 17:25

I have the four seasons' Brambley Hedge books in a frame. I used to love them, especially the winter one with the illustrations of the Ice Ball.😍

VisiblyNot25 · 13/12/2023 17:25

I love that aesthetic. We stayed in an Air B&B where they had framed flower dairies prints & they looked lovely.

BettyBallerina · 13/12/2023 17:25

It’s normal. My mum wasn’t a huge fan of Disney films. I watched many of them for the first time when I had my own children.

There’s also an annual that I loved reading as a child. I’ve seen it for sale online and considered buying it again because I recall so fondly some of the cartoons in it.

weegiemum · 13/12/2023 17:26

I have quite a lot of Moomin stuff including a couple of lamps in the lounge. Mil refers to them as my "weird little hippos" and does not approve at all!

instantick · 13/12/2023 17:26

why would it be strange i love the nostalgia of childhood things i would buy a polly pocket just to chew

cerisepanther73 · 13/12/2023 17:27

@DuvetCovers

I didn't used to get understand why grown up liked soft toys,
thought it was something 🤔 you ares susposed to grow out of naturally,

Guess what i am 50yrs age
and I started buying barbie dolls that reflect my ethnicity and are more inclusive of wide varieties of barbie dolls such as one with facial skin pigmentation ect,

I started buying them cause as a child growing up in the 70s & 80s there was nothing to reflect my ethnicity,

I also like buying occasionally soft fluffy toys from charity shop ect,

I also have quite a range of children's stories books too
I really like the illustrations of children's stories covers and books appeals to my creative artistic side,

Also children's books stories can have wonderfully simplistic meaningful aspects on more complicated or emotive issues too..
there's more to them than meets the eye,

Think of Raymond Briggs When the Wind Blows book ect
