Help me get this smell out of my hair!

Hi folks,

I went for a head massage last week where they put oils all through my hair and scalp and told me to wash it out the next morning.

That night I was so ill and tested positive for covid, so no hair washing was done.

I have washed my hair today and the sweetly/sickly smell of the oils is still there. I washed it with an oil shampoo, hoping it would cling to the existing oil, then I used my normal shampoo, co washed and conditioned.

It is a rancid, sweaty smell.

Please help :(

I reckon you need a really good clarifying shampoo

Try washing it with baby shampoo and leave it in for a few minutes, rinse then condition as normal.

Use washing up liquid, rinse, wash with nourishing shampoo and conditioner. Hopefully the washing up liquid will take the oil out. Maybe a bit drastic, just depends how bad it is!

I have used it on DHs hair when he got mucky car oil in it doing a bit of car mechanics. Shampoo alone didn't really shift it.

Washing-up liquid as in Fairy.

I know someone who used baby oil instead of shampoo in their hair. The hair dresser suggested fairly to get it out.

Yeah washing up liquid as a first wash then a second wash with shampoo

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/12/2023 14:06

Washing up liquid is what they use on birds after an oil spill, so that should definitely do it.

Or maybe Head &Shoulders massaged in for a few minutes?

Get into the shower and apply the shampoo before wetting your hair. Use either a thin runny cheap shampoo or water it down a bit so that you can distribute it better. Washing up liquid works but it doesn't do amazing things for your hair.

Upon closer inspection, I have concluded that my scalp is free from it (pressed finger tips into scalp and smelled them, all fine), and the very ends of my hair smells clean, it's the mid section (so basically from about eyebrow level downwards. I'm thinking I've shifted what was originally on my scalp downwards. Not ideal. But then why would my ends be free from the product 👀 sorry, a bit unwell and feel slightly delirious.

Like the baby shampoo idea! The shampoo I used says it's clarifying so I might need something stronger.

Vosene or supermarket equivalent, but not if you colour your hair, it will strip it.
The massage sounds bliss but there is absolutely no need to suffer that shit on your head all night, it can't penetrate any further after a few minutes.
20 minutes would have been more than enough.

Smellyscalp · 13/12/2023 14:15

@Justleaveitblankthen oh really? Do you think it could have damaged my scalp being left as long? Only asking as I do have some spots around where my hairline starts. I'm worried to keep washing my hair if that's the case in case I irritate my scalp even more!
