Any parents bought their children an electric scooter?

I was planning to get my DCs an electric scooter each for Christmas as they’ve wanted one for ages, but I’ve just realised they aren’t allowed on public spaces (only private land).

Does anyone have one and use them outside? We would only go down a certain long path which is mainly used for dog walks.. I’m going to be a bit stuck what to get them for their main present if I don’t get these - eek!

No fucking way. They are so dangerous the only kids around here that use them have fuckwit parents. A 13 year old died near us a few months ago so sad.

Elzibells · 12/12/2023 23:50

No. You'd have to be really fucking stupid to buy your kid one.

Marblessolveeverything · 12/12/2023 23:53

Not a chance hoping the police start implementing law and confiscate them.

They are an absolute menace on the footpaths. I am sorry but how on earth do parents consider them a reasonable choice for children?

Sorry to be blunt but if you're happy with your child dying in an extremely nasty, avoidable accident then sure go for it. The fact you're questioning it makes me hope you have more sense than that!!

NoTango · 12/12/2023 23:59

No. They are awful dangerous things. No no no.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/12/2023 00:00

No they're not suitable for children imo.

LitenHaj · 13/12/2023 00:00

Electric scooters are an absolute magnet for thieves and muggings where I live.

Daisymay2 · 13/12/2023 00:00

I suspect that the long path used by dog walkers you mention is private land, even if a public footpath and you would need permission from the landowner. I own some land which includes a FP and my answer would be a definite no.
Like pp, I think e-scooters are madness and dangerous, sooner the rules are applied the better.

Landlubber2019 · 13/12/2023 00:01

No but my DC friend owns one, after a near miss collision in Tesco car park, he admitted he didn't want another go.

NoMoreWrapping · 13/12/2023 00:02

How old are your children? My kids had them as teens but only on our land. I wouldn’t give them to younger kids and definitely not on public roads.

waitingforrain19 · 13/12/2023 00:02

Oh wow ok. I have only seen the adult versions that people hire in big towns, I assumed the kid versions would be small and slow.. but it’s clearly not a good idea. Hmm, in that case, does anyone have any good ideas for 9 & 10 year old girl main presents?

NO! A few weeks ago just a few miles from me two primary aged children were in a critical condition after flying out of school the two of them on the electric scooter straight out into the main road heavy with the school rush hour traffic and into the path of a car
I pray they will pull through..don't let that be your child

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/12/2023 00:33

Absolutely not. My son has been begging me for one for several years now. It's not happening. Too many awful accidents and deaths. I don't understand why anybody would buy these for their children.

JamieKnows · 13/12/2023 01:35

Right, she's heard you.

Have they got a switch OP?

Feliciacat · 13/12/2023 02:03

DH and I know some 9 and 10 year old children (children of friends) and we got them large Squishmallows (specifying they are large because large ones seem especially coveted) and slime kits (you can get some very deluxe kits and tbh, I wanted one!).

Depending on how ‘wanting to be grown up’ your children are (like, do they follow influencers on TikTok?) then they may want things like Drunk Elephant skincare and fancy trainers. Those would be good main presents! I know that sounds mad but it does seem to be all the rage for pre-teens to want teenage presents these days.

stargirl1701 · 13/12/2023 02:15

My 9 year old is getting an indoor 'surfboard'. My 11 year old is getting a large set of POSCA pens.

waitingforrain19 · 13/12/2023 07:23

Thank you for the present suggestions! My 9 year old is very much a pre teen haha. So she would love skincare and fancy trainers! I’ll be looking into an indoor surfboard too. They already had a switch from their uncle but they weren’t keen at the time. They love posca pens. Thanks again all :)

Definitely not, even if DS was a lot older. I think they're quite dangerous for kids.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 13/12/2023 07:51

Maybe Electric hoverboards instead? My DC like them and they sound similar to what you expected kids scooters to be like.

stargirl1701 · 13/12/2023 08:59

I was STAGGERED at the price of POSCAs!

PropanButan · 18/05/2024 13:11

Any parent buying or allowing their kids electric scooters is not right in the head. I see kids as you 5 riding on roads no helmet no understanding of traffic rules. And god forbid something happens. He was such a lovely little boy/girl.

If caught riding an e-scooter, fines you may receive can include: a Fixed Penalty Notice for no insurance; with a £300 fine and six penalty points. a Fixed Penalty Notice for no driving licence, up to £100 fine and three-six penalty points.
