Smelly armpits - any tips?!

Heathlay93 · 12/12/2023 22:41

Ok kind of gross I know! But I have a problem with constantly smelling of B.O.

as a teen I suffered with it, mainly only when wearing long sleeve tops/tops that had a sleeve that would touch my armpits.

im in my late 20s, I am very clean, scrub my armpits with a loofa everyday, spray a TON of deodorant (always use mens strong deodorant) but no matter what AS SOON as I wear any top that touches my armpits I stink!

it’s got to the point I’ve had to throw tops away as the smell sticks into the armpit area and doesn’t come out no matter how much I wash them. It frustrates me as my actual armpits don’t smell, the sweat itself doesn’t seem to smell and if I’m wearing a sleeveless top I never get this issue.

are there any tips to stop this? Today at the gym I walked in smelling lovely, fresh, clean deodorant pits and within 2 minutes of sweating my entire shirt smelled so bad. It’s not a strong B.O smell - rather a strong ‘musty’ smell.

I’m wondering if there any natural remedies? I’m not a big fan of hearing that deodorant is bad for us ladies, especially as I’m spraying so much of it… I feel like bleaching my underarms!!

Definitely a clothes issue not an armpit issue! Make sure you’re washing your tops on a long hot cycle with bio wash. You could try treating them now with some enzyme stain remover type stuff on the underarms

XMissPlacedX · 12/12/2023 23:03

If you do try it, don't use it after shaving your arm pits- ouch

MicrowaveRice · 12/12/2023 23:05

Use washing powder not liquid, and white vinegar instead of softener. It decrustified DH's sweaty work shirts back to softness and no stink.

I get this
Double wash armpits with bar soap then shower gel.
Sure max protection.
White vinegar sprayed on clothes armpits before washing

GG1986 · 12/12/2023 23:17

Dettol soap.
Shower gel, then get some of those exfoliating gloves to wash them with.
Dry properly with towel.
Mitchum roll on or sure maximum protection deodorant.
Then spray Sure mens 48hr on(black and purple can)
Also shave underarm hair regularly.
You could ask Dr's for a blood test to check hormone levels also.

Armpit Botox.

Yes, I'm serious. Two weeks after injections, you won't sweat AT ALL. Lasts me about 9-12 months a go.

Hiddendoor · 12/12/2023 23:27

I've just found success using biological washing liquid plus napisan on a 40°c wash. It got rid of smells on tops that had been there for a long time.

Also using Dove 96hr deodorant now.

silvafishling · 12/12/2023 23:29

Half a Lemon 🍋 squished under your arm pit apparently acts a deodorant but sorry haven't tried it myself.

MymblesMother · 12/12/2023 23:32

It will be ingrained in your clothes. I've had great success using Dettol antibacterial laundry cleanser in the wash alongside my regular wash powder.
My other top tip is to wash with bar soap (cuticura antibacterial soap/dettol soap)

Anotherdayanotherdramaa · 12/12/2023 23:48

I use Dri Clor to stop my underarms sweating.
I sweat from head to toe (other than my armpits) when doing cardio, so I use an antibacterial rinse in the laundry to avoid any bacteria lingering.

BigLicks · 12/12/2023 23:49

Witch hazel

beautifulbrothers · 12/12/2023 23:49

I had exactly the same. I also felt that the armpits of my clothes were clogging up and making me smell sooner. I've found a couple of things that made a difference:

(1) Epilate instead of shave my underarms. Any hair at all causes me to smell much sooner. And I would also sweat more after shaving. No idea why.

(2) Recognise the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant. I worked out that I didn't mind the sweat as much as the odour, so started looking into alternatives. I felt like alcohol-based deodorants were an irritant and caused me to sweat (and thus smell) more. I tried salt crystal stick (!) and alcohol-free roll-on, both of which were pretty awful. Both sweaty and smelly.

Changed-my-life kind of good was investing in AKT deodorant. I discovered it after reading this article in the Guardian:

So, 9 months later and, honestly, I will never use another deodorant. The first couple of weeks I smelled really good, but sweated profusely. 😢 Then it kind of settled and I don't really sweat much at all and wake up after 24 hours still smelling great! I'm on my 3rd tube, so far I've had the orange, green and white. Loved all three so far. It's fairly expensive, but 1 tube lasts me about 4 months. Definitely worth the key, not so much the applicator - you quickly get used to using a finger. I'm trying to get all my friends and family to try it, I love it that much!

I was going to mention this - heard about it before - where do you go to get it done, etc.?

Yellowcakestand · 12/12/2023 23:54

Another one voting for mitchum powder fresh stick.

This happened to me before when I actually used the bamboo mitchum. The smell on my clothes was disgusting and didnt come out in the wash either. The clothes didn't smell like the stick. It was gross.

Bearonthestair · 12/12/2023 23:56

You could have a mild skin infection or yeast production in the skin. Echoing the poster who said dettol soap, the yellow one in a green box. It's available on amazon. Hibiscrub will also kill any bacteria which could be producing odour.
A trip to the gp might not be a bad idea for bloods.

Mirrormeback · 13/12/2023 00:16

You are using anti perspirant and not deodorant as you keep stating deodorant.
They are different and antiperspirant is what stops you sweating whereas deodorant is just a nice smell

slowwalkofshame · 13/12/2023 00:20

Wash with dettol soap, use a scrubby puff to wash your pits. You can use a glycolic or salicylic acid wash or toner as well. Then the best deodorant I've found is the Nivea Pearl 48 hour one.

I used to get a bit pongy but no more!

stoppingby · 13/12/2023 00:22

Try a good quality dry stick deodorant. I had the exact same problem and was using Sure Men's deodorant and within an hour, urgh! The stick deodorant cured the problem.

WhatNoUsername · 13/12/2023 00:26

This is me. I can only wear tops once and have to spray the armpits of ALL tops before washing. Before I did this the smell wouldn't come out (regardless of the type of washing powder, how I washed it etc) and then you just get that stale sweat stink as soon as you sweat a little the first time you wear it 🤮

I used to use vanish spray. But I am now allergic to everything so I make up my own. I mix 2/3 hydrogen peroxide with 1/3 washing up liquid. Works really well as a general stain remover. And works on sweat. I try to leave it on for a few minutes before washing. You have to do it religiously as if you allow the sweat to bed in, you cannot get it out at all. For the same reason never wear a top more than once.

The best deodorant I have found (and I think I've tried all of them!) is Triple Dry 72 hr Roll on. I use the fragrance free (because allergies) and it works really really well. Honestly don't bother with the sprays they are useless. Try sticks or roll ons. The Triple Dry does take a while to dry which is a bit annoying but it is 72 hr one so you can put it on the night before if that's easier.

Staying well hydrated also really helps I find.

Good luck.

SwordToFlamethrower · 13/12/2023 00:28

Go to Boots and buy Driclor. Kills the sweat glands temporarily and it is magnificent

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/12/2023 00:30

Sure Maximum Protection cream roll on.

Ariel gel cold wash for your clothes.

PeopleAreWeird · 13/12/2023 00:31

Use womans ANTIPERSPIRANT

Mens is made differently

Deodorant is not always the best thing to use

unsync · 13/12/2023 00:32

I switched from Mitchum to Wild. It is fab. It works in a completely different way to deodorants. No more stink. You can use it underboob too. Also, gym detergent or the antibacterial stuff you put in the fabric conditioner drawer will get rid of stink on clothes.
