This damn wet cough - worth a GP appointment?

I'm on week 5 of a horrendous cough and am thinking about trying for a GP appointment tomorrow for me and DS who is on week 2 of it

I'm utterly miserable - it's violent enough to have made me throw up several meals. My chest rattles and it feels like there's water down in my lungs somewhere. I can't sleep properly either.

I've not been to the GP for years and am a chronic "muddle through, I'll be fine" type after a stiff upper lip childhood

I'm a teacher so using my voice all day which definitely isn't helping recovery!

Will I be deemed worthy of an appointment or am I likely to be told no because I've not had it 100 days yet?!

I'd say that a 5 week cough with a chest that rattles is definitely worth a GP appointment. Are you breathless at all?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/12/2023 22:00

I would, 5 weeks is a long time to have a productive cough. I'm not medically trained, but work in a microbiology lab that handles all those specimens.

I went after 3 weeks and got antibiotics. You need to be seen

Sounds like you need steroids.

MyCatIsPlotting · 12/12/2023 22:04

You need to go. I’ve had one for almost a fortnight which has been similar and have got antibiotics as of today. They were very clear on the phone that if it was bad enough for me to be vomiting, it was probably some kind of infection. Hope you get sorted.

I've been breathless walking up the hill to work this week actually. Put that down to absolute exhaustion

I'm terrible for downplaying illness, it's a genuine issue (even at 33 weeks pregnant, told by the consultant to get a sick note I was saying to the GP "I'll be fine" - baby was born prem 2 days later!)

Definitely go to the GP. You have put up with it for a long time. You don't want to be still ill over Xmas. If you don't have antibiotics very often, they tend to work very quickly.

NorthernGirlie · 12/12/2023 22:09

I'll ring and beg tomorrow. Tomorrow late afternoon is the only time I can go without a major hassle so fingers crossed I can get us in.

I hate going- absolutely hate it!

Go to the go, or if like where I am the walk in, sounds like an antibiotic situation

Let me know what they say! My cough started last March and lasted for 6 months, I'm not fully recovered. I was completely brushed off as they said it's bronchitis and there is nothing they can do about it.

To add having a dehumidifier at home helped! I cough much less when it's dry days and dehumidifier is on. Good luck!

Shiningout · 13/12/2023 03:41

I've had mine a week and got seen yesterday. Of course ring the doctors! It's worrying that people don't want to call when they clearly need to be seen.

NorthernGirlie · 13/12/2023 08:06

No joy today - they close for training on Wednesday afternoons 😭

Next time I can go is Friday pm so I'll have to try again Friday morning
