Or is it quite poor? I detest maths so I would have been proud of myself but just wanted other opinions

( I'm very proud of my son either way I'm just seeking options)

i would think it would depend on the average score of the class

I asked him and he wasn't sure unfortunately.

Very hard to know without knowing a lot more context.

Clarabellawilliamson · 12/12/2023 21:18

Without a comparison to others, there's really no way of knowing!

Vuurhoutjies · 12/12/2023 21:18

I would think it depends on your child. 74% seems perfectly acceptable to me.

But if your child usually gets 95%, then perhaps not. If your child wants to be a mathematician, then also, possibly not.

So how are strangers supposed to guess if he doesn't know?

It will completely depend on how hard the questions are!

AliMonkey · 12/12/2023 21:19

I'd say it was a solid "much better than average" but not "you're a genius, top of the class" level (as with maths there's nearly always someone who gets 100%!)

21ZIGGY · 12/12/2023 21:19

What a boast post! Well done child

cakeorwine · 12/12/2023 21:19

Depends on the questions.

Obviously.

Chewbecca · 12/12/2023 21:19

If everyone else got 95-100%, it’s bad. If everyone else got 50%, it is amazing. No one here can possibly know how hard the test set was.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/12/2023 21:20

I was never good at Maths, 74% for me would be a miracle.

Why? It's irrelevant what everyone else gets. I mean, I guess if it's a super easy test and the expectation was that everyone gets 90%, then perhaps. But even then, I'd say it's less about what the rest of the class got and more about what the teacher was expecting considers an acceptable grade.

If you spend your time comparing your child to everyone else, then you're just setting yourself up for failure.

ronnieandmrman · 12/12/2023 21:20

It's his first set of exams in 'big school' and I just didn't really know what to expect but I'm pleased that he's happy about it. I thought the teacher might have given the average but as yet she hasn't.

I'm sorry for the people that get annoyed with posts like this, I was just curious to know what you thought was a good score x

What are you talking about? That’s exactly how exams work. All scores are taken into account and grade boundaries are decided from there. If the class average is 50% then he’s done well. If it was 90 then he hasn’t. It’s totally relevant

@BlingLoving comparing yourself to others is literally how grading in exams works, so if you want to understand what you might achieve grade wise seeing what everyone else has is a good start....I don't understand why people say don't compare yourself to others when it comes to marks in tests 🙄

ok, seeing as you ask: for my DS, that would be a terrible score as she normally scores over 90%. For my DS, it would be tremendous.

does that help?

your question is inane. Strangers are not the people to ask. Speak to his teacher. If it’s not that serious a question, why bother asking strangers who haven’t first clue about any part of your situation?

WashItTomorrow · 12/12/2023 21:28

Well, it depends. Is he top set or bottom set? Do the classes in school all have the same exam? Is it 75% on what is considered year 6 work, or 75% on what is considered GCSE work?

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/12/2023 21:29

Literally no one can know. Like everyone said, depends on what everyone else got and what he normally gets. Also was it based on year 7 work and he’s remembered 74% or is it based on year 8 work and already knows 74%?!

Ascubudr · 12/12/2023 21:31

No it's shockingly bad.
C'mon OP it's 74% what do you think ?

Have exams changed completely? I mean yes, I get grading on a curve blah blah, but overall, a B is a B and an A is an A.

when I was at school and university, if I got an A, it didn't actually matter if everyone else did too - I got an A which is a very good mark. If I got a B, that is a good mark in absolute terms but not an A. etc.

When DS (also in Year 8) gets a grade, he's told the overall score. He's also told whether or not this is in line with the schools expectation's for HIM. I couldn't give a flying monkey if everyone else in the class gets 90% and he gets 70% if 70% is a score that is, for him, good.

But As and Bs in exams are determined by grade boundaries which are based on everyone’s scores.
