How much do you have in your pension at late 30s?

I'm 39 and I just checked my pension. I have just under 19k in total. Pitiful! How does it compare to others of a similar age? I'm sure I will regret asking this question as most will be much higher. Tempted to get a lower paid public sector job just for the pension. Currently on 40k. I've upped additional payments of £300 per month and my work pays in the minimum amount required by the government.

I have £14,000 in a private one when I was private sector for a short while, but thankfully most of mine is public sector and CS at that, I never know how to "translate" it into a pot but the projection is looking very healthy.

I've always managed Martin Lewis's half age equation if you've heard of that?

Living in france and there’s no pension schemes here - it’s all state pension and you pay in a percentage (like NI) as you work and they take an average of your working life and that’s your pension. I don’t understand how so many of you are paying in such huge amounts every month- fair play to you!! If I was in England I’d have to earn loads to be able to do that.

I don't even know! As a foreigner I started contributing about 7 years ago.. makes me nervous! I won't get pension on my home country as I'm no longer a resident there. Will need a plan b!

It was approx £600k at 38, in a final salary that was closed. But been with one company from 16, and been a higher earner for 15 of those years.
Now in the defined contribution scheme, so that will go on top of my final salary, plus state pension when I get there.

Thanks everyone for their replies, it shows a massive range. I checked mine again and I now have 19,500. It was just over 16k in August so that's something! I'm adding £300 per month on a direct debit plus the workplace pension so hopefully that will help a bit. Unfortunately my workplace only puts the minimum in.
