Surely it shouldn't be this hard to change a lightbulb?

Led spotlight in kitchen. It's taken about half an hour and a finger injury to pull the ring down, now I have a bulb that says "integral LED" on it hanging off a wire, I have no idea how to remove it and then I need to source and fit a new one. Is anyone able to help? I'm feeling like a complete idiot right now!

Is the bulb supposed to be attached to the ring? You get some that come as a whole unit

hotandwanttoswim · 12/12/2023 11:39

No it clips into the ring and it looks like the bulb is wired in with no obvious way to remove it.
New light fittings were only installed a year or so again so I'm surprised that they need changing already.

I hate those bloody things especially when they are all over the ground floor of a house.
I had all mine removed from everywhere and replaced with normal pendant lights.

If it's what I think it is, there should be a tiny plug at the non-bulb end of the wire. You change the whole light fitting rather than the bulb. They are supposed to last way longer than a year! Maybe contact whoever installed them?

I feel your pain. Our bathroom has a load of spotlights and they were a nightmare to get out. One the bulb actually broke, which was one we never managed to get out when we moved in 6 years ago!
This is, however, a must. It gives you something to hold onto to get them out
Led lightbulb remover
I discovered it after watching YouTube videos on how to replace led bulbs. One video was a bit slow and repetitive but actually showed lots of different bulb types and how to change them.

Thanks I have other lights these would work on but the ones I'm posting about don't seem to have the GU10 style connector, theyre just attached to a wire.

I think youre right, thank you. What a pain. There were about 10 lights fitted at once and 2 have gone after a year. I'm wondering if i need an electrician but very reluctant to pay for one 😬

I would try to pull the wire out to find the plug, buy some new light fittings and have a crack yourself. Get an electrician in if you find that you can't do it.

Ablondiebutagoody · 12/12/2023 15:13

Turn the relevant leccy circuit off at the fusebox first

MaybeSmaller · 12/12/2023 15:15

If you are going to call an electrician at all I would only ask that they replace all the lights with the GU10 type fittings where you can replace the bulb yourself.

Integrated LED fittings are an absolute pain in the arse. It would be fine if they lasted 10 years but as you've seen yourself, they don't.

Auntieobem · 12/12/2023 15:16

We got an electrician in to change all our upstairs downlights to ordinary pendant fittings (recessed). We've put integrated units into our en suite.

I pulled the wire down and this is what I see (see picture), the white wire is attached to the bulb and I can't see a way of disconnecting it.

There are usually some tiny screws in that white plastic connector that you can loosen to take the wires to the light out. Presumably the new light will have similar wires that you can stick in there then re-tighten the screws. I would probably get hold of the new fittings before going any further atm.

Ablondiebutagoody · 12/12/2023 16:25

Or maybe pushing down on those N,E,L tabs releases the wires?

Knittedfairies2 · 12/12/2023 16:29

Pushing down the tabs is what captures the wire, so perhaps you could try lifting them.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/12/2023 16:29

I have this exact same problem and my lights are only a few years old (3 at most).

I don't find any of these new bulbs last nearly as long as advertised. I'm going to get them replaced with something easier, because I don't want to be rewiring stuff every time a bulb goes. Plus the current lights cost more, because they are supposed to last longer.

Balloonhearts · 12/12/2023 16:30

Push on it and twist like a bayonet. I have same bulbs in my spotlight, they just push inwards then you twist them and they'll pop out.

Normal gu10 bulbs work like that but the ones OP has are wired in

Oh I see. What a pain in the arse. Remind me not to do that.
