Feel like an idiot and in pain

Oucht · 11/12/2023 19:26

Went to the dentist this morning for my check up. Mentioned I have some ache and sensitivity around a very large filling which dentist looked at and said it was fine.
Over the day the pain has got worse and I’ve looked using a mirror and can see the tooth next to it.. molar is cracked down the back. Dentist didn’t see it.

I have a history of grinding and have lost 4 teeth to it where they have also cracked. Two of which my dentist also failed to see.

I want to get it looked at properly but they’re not going to see me anytime soon after my check up today. I feel like an idiot for not asking her to look closer.. we were focused on a tooth on the other side that needs a filling.

Dont know what to do now and not looking forward to the prospect of Xmas in pain..will be the 3rd in a row with dental pain.

I would give them a ring in the morning. She's the dentist, it should not be you feeling at fault here. Sympathies Flowers

Oucht · 11/12/2023 19:50

They’ll think I’m crazy. It’s always been achey in that area so I didn’t push the issue and I’m annoyed at myself for that.

If only I’d used a mirror before the checkup I could have brought it up.
Will prob have to wait another month to get in again.

Well the problem hasn't been sorted, so it's a valid phone call. Is there someone who would ring for you, who can be quite persistent?

I know but I didn’t really make her aware there was much of a problem as I thought it was just the missing jawbone there causing me sensitivity.
I didn’t make her look around there and now it’s throbbing.

Gonna sound like an idiot.. I had a. Checkup yesterday and said it was all good but now it’s not!??

I didn’t know it was cracked. They’re nhs so you have to be half dead to get an emergency appt and right after a checkup? They are not gonna have it.

stayathomer · 11/12/2023 20:11

They didn’t see it, problem is still there, they will absolutely rush you back in there! Just ring and say you’ve found it, op don’t overthink it- just think about a Christmas without the pain x

Oucht · 11/12/2023 20:19

They never rush anyone in. One of my prior cracked teeth had to be extracted and it took 2 dentists 1.5 hours before they gave up leaving me with 4 bare roots on show as they couldn’t drill them
out..
I had to wait 3 weeks like that to see their private oral surgeon to get the roots out.

I didn’t think anything was wrong earlier so didn’t push on that fact. It was another issue she was looking at.. crack on another tooth the other side of the mouth.

If I phone they are going to say why didn’t I inform them it was so bad at the checkup. I hadn’t looked and seen a crack then.

I had the same recently, was flossing and noticed basically a crack on my wisdom tooth and I was only in the week before!
Also a grinder but I sleep in a mouthguard
They got me back in and said it was a "sticky" cavity? So I had it filled. Was a pain to get to as it was the outside of my lower wisdom tooth

Oucht · 11/12/2023 21:36

Did they question you when you needed to go back for that tooth? I know the receptionists are going to do that if I try.

Tempted to pain killer up for a week and try then as an emergency not that they will do anything.
I wear a night guard too but have almost ground through it.

The tooth that’s cracked is above where I lost 4 back bottom teeth from cracks so I think it’s been there a while as I don’t eat on it.
I don’t need this right now.

half the stress is knowing that if I phone they could well refuse to see me.

christmaspaws · 11/12/2023 21:52

No, but I've been a patient there for 27 years! He just eye rolled and said "did you chew through your mouth guard again?" And I was "no there's this weird brown hole/crack in my tooth" Grin
The hygienist (therapist) filled it that day for me

christmaspaws · 11/12/2023 21:53

Oh and I just told reception I thought I had a cracked tooth and needed a filling

Oucht · 11/12/2023 22:10

Thanks. Really worried about doing that so soon after my check up. Really angry at myself for not realising sooner. Put it down to usual pain so I didn’t bring it up.

Its almost as hard to get an appointment as it to see a gp.
one of my other teeth needs a filling and the soonest I can have that is January 9th.

I phoned the dentist and grovelled and have another appointment tomorrow. They were surprised I was phoning having just had a checkup 24 hours before.. but I just said I've managed to crack a molar.. sure it's been there ages but it's got me a new appointment tomorrow.

I feel like I'm gonna be there a lot.. expecting this to be my 7th extraction for a cracked tooth thanks to grinding and hormonal treatment for endometriosis weakening teeth and bones. Filling next week. Bruxism dentist January.

I can't afford to lose more teeth. I have lost 6 already to exactly this.. cracked right through from grinding.

Do you use a mouthguard? Mine has saved my teeth

FiveShelties · 12/12/2023 09:47

Perhaps it is time to look for another dentist. Surely the dentist should have noticed a cracked tooth.

Oucht · 12/12/2023 09:54

I sleep with one and have done for a year now but I have almost ground my way through it. I am waiting to see their specialist about it next year. (private)

They just had a glance back there and said the fillings look good... I do regularly have pain in that area but it's got worse quickly over the past day.

I wish my checkup had been 24 hours later than it was so I could have made them look better.

OP posts:
christmaspaws · 12/12/2023 09:59

I chew through mine probably yearly so just keep replacing it when you do, it does help

Greezynogreasy · 12/12/2023 10:08

If NHS, that’s typical. They allocate an reiculous 10 min slots and if any other issue presents that pretend it’s not there and it’s up to you to rebook !

Heard some horrendous stories of nhs dentistry from someone who worked nhs but now only does private due to ethics ( and money)

Oucht · 12/12/2023 10:12

Well, they have had to give me an emergency appointment tomorrow now so I can get that looked at.
I am highly expecting to be left in pain over xmas awaiting an extraction that will be traumatic if my previous teeth are anything to go by... roots left in for weeks after hours of digging and failing to get them out.

Honestly I would look for another dentist. Yours sounds hopeless from them not noticing cracked teeth, not doing urgent appointments, leaving you with exposed tooth roots etc. You can actually be registered with more than one dentist, no matter whether they're NHS or private, so it might be worth trying another to see if you like them more and if not you can stick with yours.

Thanks. There are only 2 in our town. I don't drive and due to a bladder condition I cannot be away from a toilet for more than 20 minutes so location is something I have to prioritise.

@Sera1989
That's not correct information. Since 2006, there has been no such thing as "registration with an NHS dentist."

Endeavormorse · 12/12/2023 12:17

It’s not cheap but I have Masseter Jaw Botox about twice a year after loosing 2 teeth to night clenching. I can’t wear a guard as my jaw is very small. Has really helped.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying there are no NHS dentists or that registration is the wrong word? You can sign up to be a patient of a dentist that charges NHS prices and you can be on the patient list of more than one practice

evenbarnyardanimals · 12/12/2023 16:03

There is no such thing as registration with an NHS dentist.
There hasn't been since 2006 when a ridiculous contract was foisted on English and Welsh NHS dentists which has led to a mass exodus from NHS high street dentist.
You may think 'you're registered' with an NHS dentist or multiple NHS dentists @Sera1989 (assuming you're based in E /W) but unless you're under an open course of NHS dental treatment, that/ those practice/s have no obligation at all to see you, regardless of whether you have a dental emergency, and 'you're on their patient list.'
