Forgetting words while speaking

I keep forgetting names of things while speaking. I just observed it keeps getting worse. DH keeps making fun of me. I feel very conscious speaking to people now lest I look like a fool saying "that thing over there that thing over there". I'm otherwise healthy and active. But I do have to say I get less sleep than I should be getting because I have a 1yr old who keeps waking up. Can anyone relate with me regarding this word retrieval problem?. Today when DH was asking for DD1s hat I kept saying "it's on that behind that" what I wanted to say was "the hat is on the desk behind the door". I did visit the GP and she said it happens to her quite often and just didn't seem much concerned. Any advice or similar experiences for reassurance?

Reading this thread no wonder I have problems finding words! I'm autistic, anaemic, under-active thyroid and possibly peri-menopausal. Also had Long COVID.

I find that my brain will often make me say a different word that starts with the same sound so 'I'm getting the traitor' means 'I'm getting the train!'

Have you seen a Channel 4 series called, 'The Change'? It happens to the main character, played by Bridget Christie. It's worth a watch. It is about the menopause amongst other things.

@Mrsjayy Yeah I we co-sleep. And it's gonna be a long time before she leaves our bedroom. I find younger ones more clingy than their elder siblings. DD1 was a poor sleeper. And now this clingy little thing waking up to check if I have left her alone in the bed.

it's exhausting with Dd1 I slept mostly in her room for a Couple of years just so I could function.

I do that too.

And I am hopeless at multi tasking. If I am thinking about something else or even looking at something, eg looking at a Barbie in the toy box, Instead of “pass me the drink” I will always say, “pass me the barbie” without fail. I really piss myself off.

If I even dare to go for a wee in the night, my 3 year old wakes up.

Bonus is, I now have a bladder of steel.

Oh, I do that too! It is so aggravating!

I wouldn't be worried about the big scaries - they are very rare. Fwiw when my late partner had a brain tumour (presuming this is the sort of thing you are worrying about) he would obliviously use completely unrelated words in sentences. He had no idea he wasn't making sense.

I have a 4mo and three older kids and I feel similarly to you. My brain is just overloaded. Going back to work in Feb and I do a lot of negotiation work (trade union)... really hoping I can switch back into work mode while I'm there, instead of this blur!

buddybean · 12/12/2023 13:31

@Sapphire387 sorry to hear that. Hope your partner has been cured. My health anxiety did give me doubts that something is wrong with my brain.

I feel your worries. I suffer so badly with this, I'm 37 and constantly worry about it turning into Alzheimer's. I actually had an MRI as I was so worried but it was clear and the consultant suggests stress and trauma.

Started in my 30s too. I've got better since my children have got older, I get more sleep, I have less stress at work, and I take a lot of vitamins especially D and B. But still get stuck in middle of sentences especially if tired.

BadgerFace · 12/12/2023 17:29

I had this when my children were little, it gets better as the sleep improves (until you hit perimenopause when it comes back…)

DH and I still call our mantelpiece the chimney shelf 10 years later as I couldn’t remember mantlepiece however hard I tried when trying to describe it one day.

I get words mixed up too

Put the tea in the sugar, that kinda thing

I don't think being online helps
