How to structure distribution of Xmas bonus

Nanamuffin · 10/12/2023 09:22

If you had a Xmas fund to distribute amongst a company how would you structure it:

Main lead - full time
Support line - works 3 out of 5 days
Support line - works 2 out of 5 days

One role is not more important than the other but neither role works without the other.

The allocated fund is £300

£30 per day worked, 150, 90, 60

£30 per day worked, 150, 90, 60

I think this seems the fairest and most straightforward way to do it.

SuspiciousSue · 10/12/2023 09:26

I like @ACynicalDad idea. It’s such a small pot that I wouldn’t worry about who is more senior. Just do it on days worked.

MerryMissie · 10/12/2023 09:26

Is there no bonus structure governance or is it completely at your discretion

I would expect bonus as a % of salary as a starting point and then can be increased or reduced per discretion amd use that % point as your base

However the amounts are so low here that even if you went with 0.5% on a 20k salary that gets you to £100

Is there any performance issues because if not and its such a low figure I'd say £100 each

Damnloginpopup · 10/12/2023 09:26

Absolutely. It's fairest pro-rata.

But if you don't do an equal split there's gonna be bitching.

Absolutely. It's fairest pro-rata.

But if you don't do an equal split there's gonna be bitching.

I suppose that's true, but surely nobody can argue with pro rata if it's explained to them that that's how it was divided up.

Scarletttulips · 10/12/2023 09:28

Just give them £100 each. It’s a gift not performance related.

I work in a big company we get £75 each -
DH is very senior in his company and they get £150 each.

It used to be turkeys many years ago - I couldn’t see you splitting those!!

Nanamuffin · 10/12/2023 09:29

it is a small amount but I thought it would be fairest to pro rata but my partner thinks the two part timers should be split equally!

I’ve just given out bonuses to my team. Variety of roles and hours from admin to professional and part time to full time. Everyone got exactly the same amount. No one person is more important than the other so I always just give the same across the board. Never had any complaints but to be fair in my industry it’s rare to get a bonus at all.

Mountaindhew · 10/12/2023 09:29

I agree - the same amount per day worked
5x + 3x +2x =300
10x = 300
x=300/10 =30

Scarletttulips · 10/12/2023 09:59

I would also think each member needs to be valued the same -

£100 would be worth more the the 2 days person than the full time person.

You are over thinking this and giving different amounts will cause resentment. Each has contributed.

HeddaGarbled · 10/12/2023 10:02

£100 each. Anything less seems barely worth bothering.

ColouringPencils · 10/12/2023 10:10

On the pro rata version, even though it is fair, I think the part timers might see it is as the senior staff member who needs it the least getting the biggest bonus. Therefore I would split it £100 each, especially if the part timers don't work elsewhere on their days off from you. £100 also feels nice and generous, I think they will all be happy.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/12/2023 10:43

I think for that amount, £100 each seems fairest.

The person who works 2 days a week could equally be most valuable, despite earning the least and the main lead can't do their job without support from the two part timers, who are presumably on a lower grade.

The main lead and support line who works 3 days would have to be a bit petty to think they deserve more than the person working 2 days in this situation.

I'd do this too.
I understand the prorata arguments, but this is a Christmas gift, not performance related pay.

Luddite26 · 10/12/2023 13:20

In our work everyone receives an equal amount which has been £100 for a few years but the person who does 4 nights really resents getting the same as the 3 who do 1 night but not many day hours. It's really winding him up right now!
I think how the first reply put it is fairest.

captaincalamari12 · 10/12/2023 13:26

£100 each. Anything else seems rubbish.
