How to guide DS...

DS (age 8) has some development delays and struggles with friendships. Can be an easy target for picking on / laughing at...

School has a "wear your team strip" day on Tuesday- terrible idea but they've done it since the 1960s and never going to change. The kids are supposed to wear the strip of whatever sport they play.

DS loves (LOVES) football. But would be eaten alive at the football club here so goes to a para- football weekly club. I don't think he realised that it's disabled kids only.

He also plays for a rugby club. MUCH more inclusive. Lovely club.

I've steered him towards the rugby strip. Lots of kids will be wearing the same. He wants to wear the football strip which says "para football" on the front but is otherwise the local club strip. The kids will, I fear, mock him for wearing the local strip but they never see him at football (para football is indoor and a different day).

WWYD? Let him wear what he wants. Or steer him to fitting in...

Let him wear what he wants. He’s obviously, rightly proud of his club. Let the class teacher know of your concerns in advance and send him in with a few photos, certificates from the group so she can “big” him up. As an aside, I can’t understand why the football shirt says “para” on it. There’s no need and the team should just have a name. I hope he enjoys the day.
