DS in tears from Covid pain, when to worry?

DS13 tested positive this morning. He got it from me, I came down with it on Monday and still not that well myself.

DS throat is so sore he's in tears. Its not like him. Should I worry about quinsy etc? He has his tonsils. He can't even swallow his own saliva. Have given all the usual pain killers.

I’d take him to A&E if he can’t swallow his saliva

If he can’t swallow his saliva you need to call 111 or take him to A and E

Is he already having paracetamol and ibuprofen (alternated), and this is pain that is not managed by that regime? If that’s the case then it is worth calling out of hours.

There will likely be the usual number of people along to say it’s not life threatening so you shouldn’t dare bother the NHS, but high levels of pain do count as an emergency (just not a life threatening one) and you shouldn’t feel bad for calling.

If he can’t swallow his own saliva I would take him to A+E. I was admitted when this happened to me, it wasn’t quinsy but very severe tonsillitis. Hope he feels better soon

I had similar symptoms last December/ January when I had Covid. I took paracetamol, which helped a little but then had a telephone appointment with my Surgery and they prescribed antibiotics. These really helped.
I really feel for your son. It was extremely painful.

LadyLeei · 09/12/2023 21:05

A&E. my DS was admitted straight away in that condition.

Andthereyougo · 09/12/2023 21:06

111 or A&E, I’d not take risks where an airway is compromised to the point he can’t swallow saliva.

HousedInMySoul · 09/12/2023 21:15

Yes it's an A&E job if he can't swallow his own saliva. Take phone charger etc.

Covonia throat spray is good to have in, for very sore throats. Numbs the area completely. (I appreciate this is beyond that though right now.)

Last time I had severe tonsillitis & swallowing was horrendous I ended up in A&E. I needed steroids, fluids & strong antibiotics. Get him seen.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 10/12/2023 12:34

How is he getting on today @Friarclose ?

Friarclose · 10/12/2023 21:03

Thank you all! A&E admitted him for a while on a drip and we were kept for obs, luckily he seems to have turned a corner in the night and we're home now.

Was so scary. This new strain of Covid is such a nasty one, I'm a week in and still struggling.
