Tips to avoid a hangover.....

.....and please don't say 'just don't drink' 😁

For the past few months, I've noticed my alcohol tolerance has really gone down. If I have more than 2 or 3 glasses of wine, I usually wake up with a headache and it's quite depressing. I LOVE a few glasses of wine at the weekend. It's my treat- my only treat really, but I'm not sure my body sees it as a treat anymore.

I am definitely cutting down. I have no choice, but it's quite difficult this time of year. The thing is, I don't feel anything at the time. It's not like I get tipsy/drunk quicker these days, I just wake feeling rubbish. Oh and my sleep is minimal after drinking these days too 😒 The joys of aging.

Anyway, realistically I know I will overindulgence over Christmas, so is there anything I can do (as well as drink less, obviously) to minimise the side effects?

TIA

Eat, drink water in between alcoholic drinks, consider how you’re feeling as you’re drinking.

Weirdly, one of the things about getting older is that my tolerance has gone way up. Alcohol has less effect on me than it did, and I never get hangovers.

Me too.

I went through a, luckily, short phase in my late 40s where a couple of glasses of wine left me dizzy and nauseous (shortly before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism). Now in my late 60s a bottle of wine is fine and (on a rare occasion) I have more, I am still safe and relatively capable (wouldn't operate machinery though).
I take plenty of B vitamins, vit C, vit D, vit K, mangnesium and milk thistle - no idea if that has anything to do with it not

Water, vitamin b before you go out and after, omeprazole, ibuprofen

A small study suggested that taking an antihistamine and a small amount of Naproxen before drinking would help with a hangover. I tried it last night and it did seem to work. I expect the official advice would be not to combine those things with alcohol, but it was fairly small amounts and I thought unlikely to do any damage - probably not for everyone though.

Drink lots of water or squash during the day before you go out so you start the night very well hydrated. Have a berocca or similar the morning before and the morning after. Have a big bottle of water on your bedside table in case you wake up in the middle of the night and are thirsty. To be honest, my bedside drink of choice is full sugar coke. It makes me feel better compared to just water.

I have started having my white wine with lots of ice in it.

Not very sophisticated doubtless, but it's lovely and cold and a bit less strong than the pure sort, and it makes sure I get some water (I do also try and remember to actually drink water).

MargaritaThyme · 09/12/2023 18:54

I make sure I’m well hydrated before I start drinking alcohol, then I always drink a full pint of water before bed. Obviously it means that I’m up peeing during the night, but that’s to be expected. First thing in the morning, I have a large glass of fruit juice & 2 paracetamol.
For me, red wine is the worst thing for causing hangovers. I suffer fewer after-effects if I’m drinking beer or G&T.

DragonFly98 · 09/12/2023 18:56

The obvious answer is to stop drinking, viewing alcohol as a treat is concerning.

SpringingJoy · 09/12/2023 19:01

More water.

Make sure you're really well hydrated before drinking. Ideally, down a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. Drink a big glass of water before bed and first thing when you wake up.

I swear by a cup of tea before bed.

If I wake in the night for a wee I take paracetamol then, seems to see off any headache before it starts.

JudyP · 09/12/2023 19:12

Drink a bottle of coconut water before bed - if it was a really hard night I do 2 bottles - much more hydrating than water and seems to be a miracle for me!

App13 · 09/12/2023 19:24

I keep coconut water in fridge and down it when I get back , electrolytes get to work in my sleep

ThePoshUns · 09/12/2023 19:31

Isotonic drinks are good and those hydration tablets that athletes use dropped in water

queensonia · 09/12/2023 19:33

It may be the sulphites rather than the alcohol itself. I used to take an anti histamine tablet before I had a drink. If I only had a couple of glasses of wine I’d feel fine the next morning. Don’t drink at all now though

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/12/2023 19:34

Take nurofen before bed. A hangover is an inflammatory response. So take an antiinflammatory

pinklemonata · 09/12/2023 19:49

I saw on Insta yesterday people were swearing by Lime + soda water to every other alcoholic drink - will be trying it at my Staff Party next Week!
My hangovers normally can be lessened by food, nurofen and pints of Squash before Bed!

Peacheroo · 09/12/2023 20:05

I wouldn't have too much water. You'll be pissing like a racehorse and your poor kidneys will be overworked.

A friend swears by milk thistle. No idea.

I usually make sure I eat, paracetamol before bed and orange juice in the morning. Mostly not too bad.

Peacheroo · 09/12/2023 20:05

Paracetamol and ibuprofen *

HousedInMySoul · 09/12/2023 20:06

Try and have something to eat before you go to bed

The obvious answer is to stop drinking, viewing alcohol as a treat is concerning.

It's perfectly normal to view it as a treat. The norm would be a concern if anything. OP literally said don't say not drinking.
