If you use your phone on loudspeaker when in public, can I ask why?

I’m genuinely interested in understanding the mindset behind people who do this.

Yesterday on a packed train I stood next to a woman who conducted multiple calls on loudspeaker over the course of about 20 minutes.

The entire carriage got to hear her conversation with someone about an appointment to treat a Verrucah, problems with the cat, Gary’s laziness as he hasn’t moved the barrels yet and they’ve been there since yesterday…and various other things. She was shouting as the line was bad, redialling when the phone cut out and bellowing “I’m on a TRAIN…I keep cutting out when I go under a TUNNEL..can you HEAR me”

I find the whole thing beyond baffling. Why would you want strangers to hear your business. So, if you make or answer calls and go on loudspeaker when you’re on public transport is there a specific reason you do this?

I'm glad that works for your mother but I have older hearing aids that haven't got Bluetooth so not sure what I'm supposed to do? I try and make sure calls are done as quickly as possible to avoid annoying other people and tell people to text me if possible.

If they’re NHS hearing aids @fairycakesandtea7 , make an appointment with Audiology and ask to upgrade to their latest model.

I sometimes do this when I'm on my own because my phone often isn't loud enough to hear properly.

So absolutely nothing to do with the public wankery that is the subject of the thread then 😂

I do because I prefer not to hold my phone right next to my head (the radiation emitted being a possible human carcinogen and all that). However, I don't usually make phone calls when I'm on public transport, but I do when I'm walking the dog, so outside and few people around.

But really, how is overhearing both sides of a conversation that somebody is having on their phone on the train any more irritating than overhearing both sides of a conversation that somebody is having with their friend sitting next to them on the train? I'm not sure that I see the difference...

See my earlier reply to this question. The two situations are completely different in my opinion:

But generally, if two people are sat next to each other and talking they are not usually shouting and it’s a bit easier to tune out.

The phone loudspeaker conversations tend to be interspersed with the two people talking over each other, since they are not face to face and can’t read cues, speaking loudly and repeating themselves due to the phone cutting out, poor reception etc.

I do have a hearing aid and in fact makes hearing on the phone worse. As i probably have 2 phone calls a year when i am out and my calls last less than 30 seconds, i am not carrying headphones everywhere i go.

I thought most hearing aids were compatable with mobile phones nowadays. Not many mobiles have a headphone jack anymore because they are all blue tooth, but you can get adapters for mobile phones without jacks, if you only have wired headphones

Not all those with hearing loss are suitable candidates for any sort of hearing aid.

This is abelist.

Not all those who have a hearing impairment are suitable for hearing aids.

neilyoungismyhero · 09/12/2023 17:03

I do it because I'm hard of hearing. However if I'm in a public area I tell them I'll ring back if its family bit if its business I ask them to call back. I find it mortifying otherwise.

The poster said she was wearing hearing aids, thats why we referred to them

Call me old fashioned but I was raised to consider it the height of bad manners to be forcing others around you to listen to your loud phone conversations or music whether they like it or not.

The perpetrators are usually the “me me me and fuck everyone else” selfish types.

Thats what ear phones are for ?

I thought it was because people don't have headphone jacks anymore (mine doesn't).

Interestingly I was on a train yesterday where a guy actually said that he needed to connect his bluetooth headphones and would phone the person back, Well done that man!

Unlike the woman who appeared to be having a multilingual press conference about what sort of medication someone should be taking.

I’m deaf in one ear too. So I…. Hold the phone to my good ear?

Yes I do too but find that ear working to hard. So sometimes i place my call on loudspeaker. But I wouldn't do it in a crowded place

Why would a person whonisnhard of hearing already use noise cancelling headphones? Please answer this question.
Not everyone is able to use hearing aids because they are completely deaf. Unless you get those special hearing aids made that is attached to your head.

I'm sorry that my family member's deafness disturbs you.

Not everyone who has severe hearing loss and isn't suitable for hearing aids can have a cochlear implant.

TheGhostOfTheOpera · 09/12/2023 18:06

@AIstolemylunch you do realise that not everyone has ear buds etc?
And that they are not compulsory either?

cairnterriorist · 09/12/2023 18:09

Being deaf is not obnoxious.

Being deaf is a disability to which people are entitled to reasonable adjustments for.

The abelist attitude shown towards those with hearing issues on this thread is absolutely disgusting.

Hard of hearing is no excuse - so disability is not an "excuse"?

Use headphones - many deaf people can't because they make no difference
Get a hearing aid sorted - my family member's deafness is such that they can't have a hearing aid, it wouldn't help. So they CAN'T sort a hearing aid
It's the height of obnoxiousness - so being deaf is the height of obnoxiousness?

and that's not delete worthy?

cairnterriorist · 09/12/2023 18:10

Disability is not an 'excuse' so is it an 'excuse' when I use crutches? Having a set of fucked legs is not an excuse, I should just walk better.

FFS.

Why is deafness always always treated like this. You wouldn't tell a blind person to see better, or someone who uses a wheelchair to try harder to walk. Why is deafness not treated the same?

letsgojo · 09/12/2023 18:16

I think it's hilarious when they are on loudspeaker but can't hear the other person so hold the frigging speaker to their ear 😂😂

Eastie77Returns · 09/12/2023 20:39

Well there is a difference between deaf and hard of hearing. The people on this thread who have hearing difficulties and use loudspeaker are not profoundly deaf and I think some of the responses with advice re earphones etc are from other people who struggle with hearing and have found solutions that work. I don’t think those replies are ableist.

My family member has severe hearing loss. Headphones and hearing aids won't help them.

The deleted comment absolutely was ableist.

Jeannie88 · 09/12/2023 20:45

There are just some people in this world who don't care and this is reflected with this. Always seeing people walking around talking into the bottom of their phones and wonder why? My idea of a phone is to have it to your ear and talk through the mouthset so why doesn't this happen anymore?

And on bikes. Try asking them to turn it off! Quickest way to get a stream of abuse.
