Ridiculous side effect of having heating on low

Why is it so bloody hot everywhere?

The train, my office, every single shop...I am menopausal but have I actually acclimatised myself to having the heating at max17.5 and now I actually can't tolerate anything above that? And the low temp is due to heating costs, not because I'm overheating.

I'm on the train actually sweating. The tube, forget it 😂
I've got one layer of cotton clothes on, coat is in my bag and will be all day probably 😂

Does this mean I can never go inside anywhere in winter again?!

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

We have the heating on low at home (15-16C) but are visiting the PILs who keep their house at 22C. They went out and we had the heating off for a bit, it was such a relief. They even keep the heating on overnight, so it's hard to sleep. Be glad to get home to a nice cool house!

I've never particularly felt the cold but now I really do feel the heat. Especially central heating as it makes rooms so stuffy.

Caused issues at work as the room I was in was with people who wanted heating on in the summer and I really struggled, felt really poorly. Now have a wee cold room to myself

Ongoing battle I. Our house, I'm turning it down, kids and h. Are turning it up.

Not just you, OP! I work outside year round and used to get invited into the house for tea in winter but it was BOILING and I'd be mopping sweat off my face, so now cups of tea are left for me outside. It was funny, people would say 'You must be freezing!' but I was really toasty. Shops are generally much worse than houses for being too warm.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 09/12/2023 14:25

I definitely run hotter thanks to peri, which is no bad thing as I’ve been cold my entire life!
I work in a shop and it’s kept warm because our uniforms are shit. Can’t wear outdoor clothes and the sizing on the uniforms is so rubbish there’s no room to put layers underneath. So the heating is on. It’s meant to be controlled centrally in some way but because the electric doors are always opening it seems to keep blasting out because of the cold gusts from outside. I’m always amazed as must cost a fortune but the shops are so old and with crappy systems, no one dares touch them in case it breaks completely.
I’m very glad I don’t have to deal with the tube anymore, that was crazy hot all year round.

Yes menopause breaks your bodily thermostat.
I'm way past menopause now but still have to be careful. I have always hated the feeling of wearing layers but have to do it now because if I get hot and can't peel a layer off my face turns tomato red.

I've always been like this, shopping in winter is a pain, overheating in every shop. I mainly go to the town with an indoor shopping centre now so I can leave my coat in the car and stay comfortable.

No, you’re not the only one. Since I had my son almost 5 months ago my body kind of changed settings. I used to be cold in 21 degrees, now I’m warm enough to have 19 degrees. It’s not hot flushes though, so not sure what’s changed. Hormones? Back to fabric settings? Who knows.

This happened to me too. I went from a permanently cold person to a generally boiling person! Youngest is heading towards 4 now and I've just noticed I'm starting feel the cold a little bit again, I wonder if I'll ever go back to being constantly cold.

Winnipeggy · 09/12/2023 14:45

Totally, I can't stand any other house, I'm not PM but do have a young child, our house can't really get above 17 in the winter unless it's chugging away day and night, so it's 16ish most of the time (13/14 some mornings!) ...but I never really feel cold. I HATE being in overheated houses. I think it's rough on the immune system too.

Celebrationsnakes · 09/12/2023 14:46

I've always been like this. I WFH with no heating on and the house sitting at 11/12 perfectly comfortably. In the evenings DH puts the heating on and I feel awful. Shops etc are all too hot with heating on. I've just always run hot. My mum was the same.

Mummymummy89 · 09/12/2023 14:53

It's been repeatedly reported that people heating their houses to an ambient level all year round can lead to weight gain and low metabolic function (on a statistical, societal level) because homeostasis (shivering, sweating) is the main way we burn calories. It's a risk factor rather than direct cause.

I never said it was a character flaw to heat your home too much. But I believe it is inadvisable, for one's health, one's budget, the environment.

monicagellerbing · 09/12/2023 14:56

I'm fat, I'm always roasting 😂😂

IHS · 09/12/2023 15:09

I'm post menopausal and I was too hot. I was sitting in the cathedral cafe with my glasses steaming up last time I visited. I had to go home, couldn't even tolerate the high street bookshop. Everywhere has their heating blasting out 🥵 I only had a light top and light jacket on too.

BlackJumpsuit · 10/12/2023 11:08

Oh and extra bad if it's raining out...once inside, hot sweaty and extra extra sweaty somehow
