Gift help for MIL who has everything!

Please please help me find a gift for my MIL.

She's in her 60s, very glamorous and oozes class (the complete opposite of me, hence the struggle). She has expensive taste but would be happy with an orange in sock.

I'd love to get her something that when she opens it she thinks, that is right up my street. In the past I've bought her a YSL purse, Chanel perfume , cashmere gloves. These were all suggestions from SIL so I know she liked them in previous years.

If you were to walk through selfridges with £250, what would you treat yourself to? I really have no clue! I can't get her skin care though, she's very sensitive.

I could go with a white company gift hamper but I don't feel like that really has the thought I'd like to show was put in to it. I realize the irony of asking you all to do the thinking for me 😂

🙏🏻

Luxury jewellery box/case

If she is very well off she probably buys exactly what she wants and wouldn't necessarily like something else, especially in the perfume/jewellery line.
However maybe a very well chosen book? A magazine subscription? Or something completely off the wall that she would never have considered getting for herself. You just need to show that a lot of thought has gone into it rather than just money, I think.

How about tickets to attend or do something?

Afternoon tea, cocktail bar??

Renamed · 09/12/2023 11:33

SIL pyjamas? Theatre tickets? Weekend bag? Room fragrance?

Mynx · 09/12/2023 11:56

How about a monthly flower subscription plus something for her to unwrap - liberty, Harrods, F and M for example where they do posh gift wrapping so it looks the part. Maybe a really nice candle or a Chanel soap? I could be your mother in law from what you've written (though I know I’m not!) and I’d like that!

Lucky mil. You both sound lovely!

tell her as she has everything she needs, youve donated the money to charity. She deffo does not need a present from another adult and what about her birthday do you do the same again?

Singleandproud · 09/12/2023 14:50

Is there anything she did as a child that she enjoyed but doesn't do any more. I got my mum (and DD) a course of 6 hours riding lessons and then a walk/trot/ canter ride on the beach as my mum had loved horses as a child and had her own...it was THE best gift and watching her on the horse was like watching her turn back into a 10year old - and she could still canter.

Something from One Hundred Stars?

Honestly though, if she has money, there are probably very few things that will be worth spending the money on that she hasn’t already got. For a similar relative, I tend to try and go greater on thought than cost eg she’d mentioned in passing she’d always wished she could do cryptic crosswords, so I bought her a ‘how to’ guide and some beginners books. Or she’d talked about a memory of her grandmother serving lemonade in the summer from a painted pitcher, so I found an old lemonade set in an online auction. Neither item cost very much, but they were much more treasured than the more expensive things I’ve bought her from places like the White Company and Jo Malone.
