I REALLY want to go to Antarctica. Has anyone here been?

I mean it's pretty much impossible considering one weekend trip would swamp my entire life savings... but I've decided I'm winning the lottery tonight so it's cool.

No pun intended!

Minus 60 apparently. I'm having a hard time actually imagining that temperature and what it feels like.

But I'd bloody well love to go. Whales, penguins, the purest scenery on earth and complete and utter peace.

@StressedOutSemolina No need to be like that! You could say that about anything but we all have our different opinions on what we feel comfortable with . Like I said I’m not criticising anyone else for going.

Seriously though. Just go 😀

@StressedOutSemolina Sorry if this has already been said, but I've actually just found a competition to win a 12 day Antarctica expedition 😁 It's on Classic FM but I think the closing date is today so quick!! Good luck 🤞🍀

We have friends that are currently on with. It's an expedition cruise with Seabourn. The photos she has sent me are absolutely incredible. The weather has been amazing, apparently the crew have been commenting it's the best weather they've ever had.

They've been off on zodiac boats, she sent me a video of some people doing the polar plunge (madness!).

Total bucket list cruise, but at around £13k each minimum then unlikely to happen for us without some kind of lottery win!

Get a job with the Antarctic Society, they will get you there.

One of dh’s friends works for them, he’s gone for most of the year.

My BIL went as a once in a lifetime trip. Cost about 10K with Noble Caledonia. He said the trick is to get a smallish ship which can get in the nooks and crannies that a large vessel won't attempt and gets you so much closer to wildlife. Also much smaller numbers onboard. Will bump the cost up though - but it's Antarctica! I so want to do it.

it would be intriguing to know whats under all the snow and ice

A training arena for Predators if you watch the film Aliens vs Predators. There will be a limited window for visits to the continent I presume. The Southern Ocean isn't known for its gentle nature and winters down there will be literally a polar winter

It's a bucket list destination for me, and the only place on earth I feel I must see before I die. We finally took the plunge (not the polar one!) and are going in January 2025. We'll be away for almost four weeks including the international flights and a 22 day Hurtigruten expedition cruise.
It's insanely expensive but we can afford it as a one off and are generally pretty restrained in our spending.
Beyond excited.

That's very true, don't go down any holes that you know the technology is not available to make said holes

My Christmas present for DH was a trip to Antarctica via Rio and the Falklands at the end of the year - it beat a jumper. Just retired, if we don't do it now, when will we, and it was something that DH particularly wanted to do. Be grateful for any tips from those of you who have been, or know others who have. Excited and a little nervous - but that's largely due to the bank balance!! Grin
