Only been in my role since September, however been offered another role (still band 2, in a different department) can someone explain how internal nhs job moves happen? Also when shall I tell my manager (obviously need a reference from him) and what about notice? Thank you

In my trust you'd have to apply, be interviewed and then receive a formal job offer unless you were being redeployed by HR. You couldn't just be offered a job with no application process. You'd have to give your standard notice - generally a month at your grade.

Sorry @Sparkletastic yes applied, been interviewed and been formally offered the job. Wasn't sure what the protocol is now? My manager has no idea that I'm planning on moving, so I presume that when I am next in (not till Wednesday) I let him know

Your notice period will start when you tell your manager so if you're keen to get moving I wouldn't wait until your next shift to tell your manager. There may be some internal HR processes which need to take place, depending on what role you are moving from and to you may need different occupational health or DBS checks, and those can take time too.

Right yes then you need to email your manager to let them know asap.

I'd make sure you tell your boss before the reference request goes in. Especially if it's going to be a surprise. They'll need to references and DBS check started asap. If it works well it may be only 3 or 4 weeks before they can confirm the checks and you can hand your notice in.

@JessicaBrassica thank you

You need to let your Boss know they will contact them very soon for a reference.

rainpleasestop · 09/12/2023 15:31

Do you have an offer subject to references and checks etc? Is so and you know all will be ok can hand notice in now or wait until the checks are all done. Just means you can start quicker if hand notice in now

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/12/2023 15:34

Inform your boss asap but don’t give notice until you have your unconditional offer which will be when all the checks are done.

It can be a bit slow. I moved up within the same ward and it still took ages!

I've always emailed my notice. As others have said, though, employment checks can take SO long, even when you're moving to a different dept at the same hospital. My notice period is 8 weeks, the checks took about 8 weeks too, so I couldn't give notice until they were done. Then my manager wouldn't let me move until the full notice period was up 🤔

I used to work in local government. One of my colleagues was offered another job... Following references the new job mysteriously disappeared... Don't hand your notice in until your references are back!
