Worst sickness bug I’ve ever had 😔 help!

Any advice would be greatly received. I have the most horrific D&V 😔 came on this morning about 9.30am - I was on the toilet every 15 mins until about 12noon. It then turned to vomiting and I was being sick roughly every 20 mins for a few hours. Since about 5pm it’s been every 40ish mins. I just went an hour with nothing then had both ends going at once. It’s literally water from both ends.

I’m not usually one for sickness bugs - I’ve had maybe 3 in the last 20 years. This is by far the worst. What should I be doing? I can’t even keep water down but I feel SO dehydrated my head is throbbing 😔 I’m trying just to take tiny sips. I’ve now changed to ice chips because I need something to wet my mouth. It’s so dry it’s unreal 😔 I’ve been sipping rehydration sachets but it’s all obviously just coming back out.

Can anyone give any advice? I’m assuming it’s just a case of letting it pass? I don’t really know what I need to be honest. I think I just need to write down how awful I feel.

I had this last week... it was horrendous but after two days I felt much better. Took me about a week to eat normally again. I haven't had a sick bug in years. You will hopefully start feeling much better very soon! It really made me appreciate being healthy.

HesAWankerOp · 09/12/2023 08:40

Lucozade sport has some salt in, so better for rehydration than regular lucozade or other fizzy, sugary drinks. Dioralyte is still a better idea though, maybe alternate between the two. Norovirus is really ramping up at the minute, so is very possibly that. It generally resolves over 1-3 days. I hope you are feeling much better soon op💐

I had one so bad about five years ago that I went to the out of hours after constant vomiting for 3 days - he wanted to give me an anti sickness injection in the butt but my blood pressure was very low. So I got wheeled round to ED for an IV drip and injections of different anti sickness meds. Stayed over night on a ward with an IV and felt like a different person in the morning. However this was back in the day when you could actually get into a hospital!

@Mouthfulofquiz me too when I had campylobacter. I went from being a healthy, fit 20 year old to hallucinating with the dehydration and begging to die.
OP if it carries on all of today get to a hospital - severe dehydration Is dangerous and it is true what this poster says about low BP. You may need an IV to get fluids into you.

Lucozade is your friend.
it’s the only drink that’s barely tolerable unless nauseous- then it’s really easy to drink. I think it’s the salty taste.

evenbarnyardanimals · 09/12/2023 14:26

I think if you're still like this tomorrow, ask your DH to buy you some cyclizine OTC for the nausea. Even if you can't swallow the whole tablet, nibble on it and sip some ribena in stages until the whole cyclizine tab has gone.
Obviously need to check your medical history is ok with cyclizine (anti-emetic).

evenbarnyardanimals · 09/12/2023 14:27

To add, if you're then able to get past the nausea and rehydrate; then it's just a matter of waiting it out re the diarrhoea (hopefully).

CrunchyCarrot · 09/12/2023 14:30

Ahh you poor thing OP!! I use ORS hydration tablets, you let them dissolve in water, they come in a couple of flavours, very palatable.

I hope you feel better soon!

DeanElderberry · 09/12/2023 14:38

The best rehydration solution is home-made: a pint of boiled and cooled water with a teaspoonful of glucose or sugar, a pinch of salt, and the freshly squeezed juice of an orange or easy peeler. A tiny sip at a time - it's easily absorbed and should help you to recover.

I agree that dioralyte is beyond vile.

Once you're over it, take some supplementary B vitamins at bedtime for a week or two - you'll have flushed a lot of them out of your system over the last few horrible days. Sympathy - hope you recover quickly.

HermioneWeasley · 09/12/2023 15:09

How are you today @Inyourwildestdreams

Inyourwildestdreams · 09/12/2023 15:23

Thanks all.

@HermioneWeasley Still feeling incredibly nauseous. Vomiting seems to have stopped but I’m still having to run to the loo every couple of hours. Trying to rehydrate and just take it easy today!

Nothing to add except that I’m so sorry for you! Awful to have this.

the best thing about it is that you will feel better soon and you’ll be so happy and relieved that it’s over. Lovely clean sheets on the bed and a home facial and manicure to treat yourself is what I’d recommend.

if you work outside the house I would consider taking a couple of days off even if you’re recovered by Monday. To rest the body

justasking111 · 09/12/2023 15:32

I had it for five days. Then thought sod it and took two immodium, then one more. The poohing stopped. I think my colon was just overactive by this point.

Lollipopsicle · 09/12/2023 15:37

Just coming out the other side myself OP. I've only had water in the past 36 hours as anything else brought on the vomiting. I too was on the loo holding a bucket and expelling both ends - for hours. Really hope I haven't passed it onto DH. Just managed a slice of toast which I've nibbled on for the past hour. No appetite at all. A nurse friend said it's almost certainly Norovirus, but it will pass. Hang on in there. Hope you feel better soon.

DeanElderberry · 09/12/2023 15:40

If it's Norovirus, the advice used to be that you'd continue to shed the virus for 48 hours after you stop showing symptoms, so should stay away from work for that long. Of course, many people ignore that.

Slightly bitter reminiscences of the autumn the creche next door to work and the local hospital were both closed to visitors because of NV but lots and lots of us got infected more than once because brave little soldiers kept showing up to the office regardless. I'm sure other people upthread also pointed out that it could be Covid.

Daniki · 09/12/2023 19:09

Sounds like norovirus. It is horrendous! Had it a few months ago and I could barely walk my legs were so sore.
I was drinking Powerade to get me through as I can't stomach diorlyte and it helped. You just have to wait it out unfortunately 😩

AQuantityOfNaughtyCats · 09/12/2023 19:14

No help now but for the future- I keep a tube of rehydration tablets in the house for these events. Lots of brands and flavours available and they keep for ages. For kids you can freeze it into lollies so they take it slowly.
