Sugar in diet thread - am I alone?!

Not trying to do a TAAT more just that since reading a thread the other day where a staggering majority (atleast at the point I read it) did not eat any refined sugar or very small amounts.

It's left me feeling a bit weird about my diet. I'm not overweight at all but am I being more unhealthy than I realise?

Breakfast most days is two crumpets with jam and a cup of tea with 2 sugars, glass of orange juice or apple juice. Lunch I'll usually have a folded flatbread with onions, salad, cheese, chilli jam. Dinners vary and we do make everything ourselves, as in make our own chips out of potatoes, make our own sauces for pastas and curries etc and we don't add sugar in them but we eat a lot of pizza, pasta, curries, stir fries, burgers with caramelised onions, roast dinners etc.

I'll have a couple of biscuits or chocolate a few times a week. I drink a lot of water but do also have a glass or two of lemonade most evenings. Occasional pack of sweets or chocolate or popcorn in an evening.

I kind of thought I was relatively normal?! But now I feel like I'm being really unhealthy and I'm questioning myself when I put jam on crumpets or chilli jam in my flatbreads or caramelise my onions.. do I need to cut back?!

No judgement, but since you asked, your breakfast is basically sugar.
Sugar on carbs, with sugar water + actual sugar in tea = sugar breakfast.
The rest sounds alright to me :)

Your breakfast sounds like a sugar nightmare to me but if you're having a decent portion of veg with your lunch and dinner then the rest seems OK sugarwise. A dietician would probably suggest cutting down on the lemonade (and hope that your pies pizza stir fry etc is homemade).

Much better explained by @isittimetoflounceyet :)

Not drinking any sugary stuff is a great way to cut down.

I don't eat much sugar because I constantly battle with my weight. I would love a couple of crumpets and jam right now.

I would get very plump if I had toast and jam with orange juice every day! It’s not just about weight though, all sorts of bad things happen when insulin spikes, dementia has been linked to high sugar diets as well. I do love choc and sweets etc but they are clearly treats so it’s easier to monitor or balance out with exercise, it’s when the daily meal is high sugar that you it gets a bit unhealthy as it’s so constant.

I eat a fairly high fat/sugar diet but stay a healthy weight by calorie counting. I'm 43 and all my health checks have come back healthy. I also vape 🤣 If I develop health problems I'll change but I'm doing okay so far.

Sounds all good except for the breakfast - cut one of those things out every couple of weeks and in a few weeks you won’t notice the difference! id keep the crumpets though - life’s too short to not have crumpets but maybe marmite or peanut butter (the natural ones, not Sunpat) instead of jam.
The rest all sounds fine, very similar to my diet and I’ve always been thin with good teeth and no health problems.

I put on weight easily and have struggled to lose weight since having my children so I wouldn't eat the same breakfast ad you. It also whilst yummy wouldn't fill me up and I'd be looking for something else to eat quite quickly. I tend to have porridge with fruit and nuts in the morning or eggs. Lunch is usually a sandwich, fish with veg or an omelette, fritatta or similar. My dinner is cooked from scratch similar to yourself and I absolutely do eat biscuits (probably a lot more often that I should).

If you are at a healthy weight I don't see the harm but if you feel stuck in a rut there is no harm in changing things up a bit.
