Planning a surprise weekend away in Bath for DH in January and wondered if you could share some suggestions of nice places to stay, eat and visit. We are mid 50s if that’s relevant.

Bath is lovely just to wander round and reasonably compact so worth just spending some time strolling.

Thermae spa baths are busy but there’s a nice outdoor (heated) rooftop pool if that’s your thing. You’ll need to book in advance tho.

The Walcot was nice for dinner when I went recently. Or Upstairs at Landrace is good. Both on the same street.

You’ll have a lovely time!

Bath Abbey
One Royal Crescent
Roman Baths - the restaurant there is good
William Herschel house/museum

Bath is beautiful. Small & easy to get around. I did the thermae spa but didn't love it to be honest
Book the Roman baths beforehand if you want to visit as we couldn't get it.
So many nice places to eat and drink it's an amazing city

Dd1 and I went in September. Bath is beautiful. The architecture is just amazing. If you visit the Roman baths (which I would recommend) make sure you book for as early in the morning as you can. We went in about 9ish, no ques whatsoever and it was a pleasant stroll around. As the day progressed we could see the ques building and building and it was heaving.
The Abbey is beautiful and the square behind it often has some lovely buskers in it. There was a violinist when we were there. Also behind the Abbey is an amazing bookshop called Toppings and co. Its massive and they serve you free tea and coffee whilst your look.
The walk up the canal to Pultney Bridge is also lovely.
If you are into your regency architecture then a visit to the Royal crescent and the circus is a must. For a cracking view of the city you want to do the bath skyline walk. If you do this in the evening you get to watch the sun setting over Bath which again is beautiful. It is a bit hilly in places but you can just hop on the uni bus from the town centre and it will take you up to the main view point. Can't remember what that is called now, think it is something fields. But this is easily found on a Google search if you look up Bath skyline walk. Have an amazing time. We loved it!

The Holbourne Museum is really lovely and a beautiful building too. Sometimes it's temporary exhibitions are lovely.

Laska2Meryls · 08/12/2023 22:09

If you like Italian food then you must try and get a booking for Sotto Sotto. Its really good. Also Chez Dominique for lunch is lovely.
We stayed at Dukes Hotel - really nice place and easy to walk in but no parking.. However they can let you have contact details for a nearby churches who let out parking spaces you can book for the time you are there. We used them and it was easy to sort out.
One Royal Crescent definitely worth a visit.

Defiantlynot41 · 08/12/2023 22:10

Afternoon tea at the Royal crescent hotel is fantastic

GMH1974 · 10/12/2023 14:54

The Costume Museum is fantastic too and the shops in Bath are lovely.

way2serious · 10/12/2023 18:08

Thanks everyone.
Has anyone done afternoon tea at the pump rooms?

nokidshere · 10/12/2023 22:17

The pump rooms are beautiful and afternoon tea is lovely. But so is their fabulous brunch menu. Definitely worth a visit.

madamegazelle1 · 10/12/2023 22:33

Great place to visit! I can highly recommend Apex Bath hotel- great location and very reasonable price for the facilities. Often have 20 percent off so worth checking. Never had breakfast there as so many places to
walk too from there. Vino Vino is lovely
for a sharing platter lunch, Giggling Squid
good for an evening meal. So much choice
for food- I’d wander during the day and book somewhere you like the look of.

TinPanSally · 10/12/2023 22:45

We like the Giggling Squid too. It has a nice atmosphere. The Coppa club does nice light meals, and I found it really welcoming.

RampantIvy · 10/12/2023 22:54

Second the Giggling Squid. I have eaten at their Salisbury restaurant.

I love Bath. I have family near there so get the opportunity to visit often. The Christmas Market this year is excellent.

I would avoid the Jane Austen experience. It is a rip off with not much to see.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/12/2023 22:59

We went during half term, mainly to look around the uni. We stayed 2 nights. Loved it! Gorgeous architecture. Roman Baths a must. We stayed in a little hotel (bed and breakfastt really) called Eight which was very characterful with lovely staff and in a good central location.

Another vote for Sotto Sotto. Really nice food and ambience to match.

OddityOddityOdd · 10/12/2023 23:00

Parking is awful. If you are driving use public transport or walk once you get to Bath. If your hotel isn't central use the park and ride.
