Children bedtimes

What time do your year 3 and year 5 children go to bed? Also do they go at same time?

Have a 3 year old but not a 5 year old.

Dinner at 6, finish around 6:30, play & tele whilst we tidy, aim to go upstairs around 7 for bath, out of bath around 7:30, books & milk until about 8-8:10 and then into bed and she's often asleep by 8:150

Have a 1 year old also so will have a 3&5 years old in a couple of years time and think that we'd do the same as we currently do - all go up at the same time but youngest out the bath first and quicker books / bed. So older one ends up getting into bed about 20 mins after the youngest one.

My 5 year old is in bed and asleep for 7:20 after books/chat. My 19 month old goes roughly at the same time but sometimes before depending on how tired she is.

ColleenDonaghy · 07/12/2023 22:02

Ours are 5 and 3. 3yo heads up about 7-7:15, asleep 7:40-8pm.

5yo is supposed to go up about 7:20 and be ready by 750 (groclock timings!) but sometimes that slips. Sometimes she's instantly asleep at 8pm, others she plays gently for a bit.

If we're both home, we take one each. If we're solo, we bring them both up on 3yo's schedule and do stories together, 5yo can then play with light on while 3yo goes over and then 5yo gets lights out and a cuddle.

My year 2 and year 5 go to bed at 8.00, year 5 child reads in bed for 30 mins.

WorkCleanRepeat · 07/12/2023 22:06

Mine are 6&8 now and they still go to bed at the same time. At 3&5 that was about 7pm. Sometimes the 3 year old was tired and took herself up earlier.

Beansandcheesearegood · 07/12/2023 22:12

Thanks all. Sorry I wasn't clear. Dc are 7 and just turned 10, school years 3 & 5. @dontforgetme mine go up together around 7:45pm but dd year5 now pushing to go later- more to not go at same time as brother I think! Will try the later reading time.

At what age did people manage to get their children into a routine?

dontforgetme · 07/12/2023 22:15

@Beansandcheesearegood sometimes she reads and sometimes she just messes about with her squishmallows.
She's also started asking to go upstairs later than her brother. By 8pm I seriously need some child free time though Blush

You were perfectly clear!

Beansandcheesearegood · 07/12/2023 22:18

Yes, see this is why I don't want to push it later! I'm too tired by this point! 1 night a week she does activity that means it's 9pm bedtime- I feel we don't get much of an evening childfree by then. I like the in room but read, play etc idea! Thanks

I like my 5 year old to be asleep by 7.30pm. Sometimes it's more like 7.45 though if it's a shower night.

Rinkymcdinky · 07/12/2023 22:22

I have ones in year 4 and 5.

They go in the bath 6 pm then come downstairs in pjs. Younger child goes in the bath.
They then watch some telly/ read until 7:30. I read to them downstairs and then they go up for 8. They’re allowed to read/quietly play until 9.

Rinkymcdinky · 07/12/2023 22:23

No children downstairs after 8 pm!

Quornflakegirl · 07/12/2023 22:24

In year 5 mine got into bed at 8 and read until 8:30 on school nights. They’re in year 6 and and it’s bed for 8:15 and they can read until 9pm. Weekends it’s bedtime at 9:30.

APurpleSquirrel · 07/12/2023 22:36

My DC are 9 & 5 - they both go up at the same time (approximately 7pm) with aim for lights out by 8pm. However, DD (9) can stay up later to read in bed & once a week gets a movie night which finishes later.

Sorry OP, primary school classes aren't called years here, so it's very easy to misread posts that talk about "year 5" DC as "5 year old".

At what age did people manage to get their children into a routine?

Edited

My children aren't the age OP is asking about, but I hope it's ok to answer this! My nearly 4yo has been a "like clockwork" child from about 18mo. Routine and schedule was almost identical every day (not set by me) until his sleep needs changed and then he'd fall into a new routine and that would be that. From 18mo until 3yo he slept 8pm-8am, then napped 2-4pm. He now sleeps 6pm-7.30am and no longer naps (although arguably would still benefit from one but he did not cope with having a "sometimes naps sometimes doesn't" schedule at all, the constant changing of bedtimes and wake up times that went with that really messed with him.

Get used to it Op because ut will push until about 10pm over time. You just adapt. That does seem a bit early for a Year 5. Then later on, in the teen years they will be in their room and going 'to bed' as in asleep much later than you! Seems strange at first but it's just a new routine.

Mercury2702 · 07/12/2023 23:30

My ds is 7 and half 8 is the limit. Normally he’ll go up and get sorted at 8pm if he can do something in bed until half 8. Other times he’ll be downstairs till 20 past 8 but knows if he’s doing something downstairs, it means he has to be straight to sleep when he goes up.

Fridays, weekends and holidays I’ll allow him to stay up until 9.30/10pm, unless he chooses to go up earlier and have no issues with him. When I do this, he’ll go straight back into normal routine on a Sunday night
