Flat for rent at 900 pounds - should we offer more?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are moving from London to Manchester.
We have found a 2 bed flat in the suburbs for 900 pounds in what we were told was a nice area about 50 mins by bus from the city center.
We are interested in renting it for a couple of years.
The first round of viewings and offers were yesterday.
My husband suggested offering 1000 pounds instead so that we are sure to get it.
Im on the fence about it.

What do you think?

Thank you

There is a scam of showing people flats but then renting them to nobody... You did look inside the property in person & meet the owner or agent, right?

My son had to offer 10% over asking price for a flat to rent in York due to short supply. It was the only way he could get put at the top of the list of people to be put forward to the landlord by the agents. He'd been looking for six months and put himself forward as wanting to rent about a dozen flats beforehand, but they always went to someone else. Demand is now so high in some places that you have to offer more than asking price just to be put forward.

Total aside but if I was commuting into Manchester I’d want to live on a tram line not a 50min bus journey away! What’s the area?

Which area? You definitely would benefit from being on the tram line. 50 mins on bus is a long way.

Total dick move to offer over the stated rent on a property, this is how rents are rising unaffordably for locals and landlords are getting away with screwing people over.

Not in a city but my neighbours got into a bidding war for their flat. Rentals everywhere are like gold dust, you won't be paying the advertised rent for anywhere at the moment.

50 minutes by bus is nowhere near the city.

Edited

How else are you going to get a property in areas where demand outstrips supply???

What's the area? Buses aren't amazing in Manchester.

I wouldn't offer more.

x2boys · 08/12/2023 08:36

Yea I would also want to be in the Tram line ,having lived in Greater Manchester my whole life Buses can be very unreliable and can take much longer than the suggested route times in heavy traffic

50 mins is miles away - I can get to Manchester city centre in less than 50 mins and I live in Stoke!
