70s malt extract stuff

Anyone know what I mean? You’d get a spoonful in the morning, and something syrupy (orange?). Is it still around?

Yes! A spoonful of malt extract and 'orange from the clinic'. I think it was given to parents of all children under a certain age. You can get malt extract still from healthfood shops - good to use in baking, especially for malt loaf.

Samsonsmum · 07/12/2023 17:13

Virol

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 07/12/2023 17:14

We had this as kids. We would jump around pretending we were in a Pooh Bear story, eating Extract of Malt

Lifeinlists · 07/12/2023 17:16

Yes Virol. My mum used to get it for me when I'd been ill 'to build me back up'! I absolutely loved it - could have eaten the jar.

Jinglingallthewaytochristmas · 07/12/2023 17:20

My husband buys it.

Extract of Malt & Cod Liver Oil for all under 5s courtesy of 1948 reforms and the poor state of nutrition that army conscripts showed 1939-45. This was a time when the nation approved of the State assuring the future health of the nation. Food Banks? Absolutely not. We would, as a nation, have been ashamed to have them. As I am now.

ApricotLime · 07/12/2023 17:29

Yes Virol malt extract tasted nice.
Rosehip syrup for vitamin c

Paradiseflycatcher · 07/12/2023 17:33

Yes, I bought a jar think it was from Holland and Barrett, I use it in baking and it's nice stirred into hot milk for a comforting night time drink

fussychica · 07/12/2023 17:34

Virol, loved it and pretty much lived on it plus milk for a while. I also used to love Rosehip syrup and the orange juice that the clinic gave to babies in the late 50s, early 60s. I thought Woodward's gripe water was a nice flavour too.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 07/12/2023 17:45

I remember Virol. I used to muddle up the words Virol and vile. I think I assumed Virol had been named for its appalling taste.

PickleSmith · 07/12/2023 17:48

It was a spoonful of Rosehip syrup in my day

SwedishEdith · 07/12/2023 17:53

Oh, god, this has brought back a memory of lining up in the kitchen while my dad administered a spoonful. Vile.

But yes to the orange and rosehip syrup from the clinic.

FadedRed · 07/12/2023 17:56

Haliborange tablets were my mum’s go to when we were kids, she hated cod liver oil and wouldn’t have it in the house. They were really delicious, like little orange flavoured sweeties.

Pozz · 07/12/2023 18:03

I used to love malt extract as a kid. We used to live up for a spoonful and lick the spoon.

AdaColeman · 07/12/2023 18:11

Oh yes, I remember the spoonfuls of malt, during the winter and after you'd been poorly. I liked the taste, and later I used to use it when baking.
I still get rosehip syrup, I like it drizzled over vanilla ice cream.

During the war, my Mother would go out gathering rosehips at the weekends, it was quite an industry where she lived.

HappiestSleeping · 07/12/2023 18:12

Samsonsmum · 07/12/2023 17:13

Virol

Or "Vile" as my sister and I called it.

overwhelmed2023 · 07/12/2023 18:14

We had three tablespoons per day!! It was nearly nice but ultimately not quite a treat a bit like unprepped jelly squares or cinnamon sticks or glacé cherries 😃

Iateallllllthepies · 07/12/2023 18:16

My mother was obsessed with it. I was a “sickly”
child, always being sick and had stomach aches. The GP recommend more barley malt to build me up. That along with the high fibre brown bread for my bowel problems.

Finally found out at the age of 41 that I’m coeliac. The malt and brown bread was causing my childhood issues 🤦🏽‍♀️ Cheers for that, mother.

thatgingergirl · 07/12/2023 18:18

Delicious stuff - I buy it from a brand called Potters now.

BrimfulOfMash · 07/12/2023 18:20

Virol and a Haliborange tablet.

Rose Hip Syrup ( in the exotic flat oval bottle) was considered too expensive in our house but I had it at my friend’s.

Gymnopedie · 07/12/2023 18:22

Virol with a chaser of Minadex when I was little.

florentina1 · 07/12/2023 18:22

We had malt, cod liver oil.haliborange tablets. I liked the malt and hated the rest.

i also remember that when we had our weekly bath my nan put dettol and soda chrystals in it.

Growlybear83 · 07/12/2023 18:43

I was brought up with haliborange tablets and malt extract with cod liver oil - I used to love them both. I bought a jar of malt extract last year but I couldn't stop eating it and the jar only lasted a couple of days.

Treaclewell · 07/12/2023 18:59

I loathed Virol, there was something about the texture and the way it stuck to palate. But it did contribute to pre-reading. They had populated Tonbridge railway bridge with adverts. Orange surround and text on a purple background and we saw them every time we walked into town. So I learned "Virol, adolescents need it," "Virol, expectant mothers need it," and others with equally long words which I have forgotten. Along with the reading, before I went to school. Didn't read books until I was 7. Janet and John were not as interesting as those long words. "Virol, convalescents need it".
I think there is a market in those metal adverts. I've seen them on ebay.

3peassuit · 07/12/2023 19:06

I’m a 1950s child and remember my mother dosing us up with malt extract and some vile tasting liquid called minadex. I think we had a really good healthy diet so it was really not necessary.
